That's the reason for using the manufacturer's tools for a thorough diagnosis and fix. Their tools will save a lot of hard disk replacements.
For a simple LLF the zero-wipe is all that's needed. You end up with a clean hard disk 'down to the metal' as they say. Which always gives a better foundation to build on.
I should mention that a modern IDE has ongoing statistical information that it uses to mark a bad sector so as not to use it again.
