Post Mepis 8.5.03 64 BitDoes not auto find all hardware drivers
I have 200 plus hours trying to figure out what synaptic packages to load .I have played with 8.5 32 Bit ,64Bit and Mepis 11.0 Which by the way does a better job of at list auto finding my Nividia drivers but not all. Currently I have the bought 8.5.03 64 bit installed and updated . I still do not have a clue as what to do all attempts at guessing which packages to try have failed even recommended ones from wikiwiki etc.
System Build
Case: HAF 932
Mother Board :EVGA Classified X58 /3 Way SLI & Cross Fire
Video :EVGA GT-430
CPU : Intel I7-950
CPU Fan :Cooler Master V8
1. LG Blue Ray DVD Read/Write (with laser scribe labeling)
2. ASUS DVD/CD Read/writer
PWR SUP :Corsair Pro 850
6 gigi ram will up grade to 24 gig

My mother board is a high end gaming board designed of over clocking comes with windows software and drivers for that purpose to run 600 watts into the CPU to push it to 4.1 GHZ the video card is also Nvidia based card designed for over clocking and of course for 3D
'
1.Mepis wont even find My Nvidia chip or audio and full video drivers or over clocking drivers
2 Cant find Laser scribe drivers and does not read from ASUS Dvd Read Writer
3 Some Flash Plug Like adobe flash play though installed in synaptic does not work in fire fox when watching Hulu TV

PS : I am not a gamer but I wanted a system to handle future developments and extreme HD video streaming and multitasking at the same time with ability to spare .

I is Hardware to new? or can any of you recommend which specific packages to down load

Any expert help would be greatly appreciated .I really don't want to go back to Windows

Thanks Ken

hi there,

nice machine! there is a set of scripts available for newer nvidia drivers.

>easy-now< :)

i think the general way with synaptic is, reload, mark all upgrades, apply. it knows which applications are installed and which have upgrades available.

ps it's early

Hi Ken

Really nice set-up!

  • Nvidia Driver
As Loco said - the easiest way to install the Nvidia driver is to use sgfxi. Loco has the link above. Follow the instructions for installing sgfxi and then you drop out of X, log as root, and simply run:
    Code:
    sgfxi

Sgfxi will download the correct headers for your kernel, plus also the build-essential libs for compiling the nvidia module. It sounds complicated but it is actually very easy. Then just follow the on-screen prompts.

Once the driver is installed, and you're back in MEPIS KDE, opena konsole and as user:
    Code:
    glxinfo | grep direct

This will query if direct rendering is available. it should return something like this:
    Quote:
    direct rendering: Yes
    GL_EXT_Cg_shader, GL_EXT_depth_bounds_test, GL_EXT_direct_state_access,

If it says 'yes' - then the driver has installed correctly and you have full 3D capability.
  • Laser Scribe (Burner)
By laser scribe - do you mean light scribe? If you do - then check out this thread - it's for 64b Lightscribe (viewtopic.php?f=55&t=27574)
  • Flash
Flash in 64b is still not great. Adobe did release a plugin for 64b - codenamed "square" - I understand it works but not sure how much it is updated. Your best bet might be to use Google Chrome browser. It has flash built in - and is constantly being updated. Get installation debs from here (http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?platform=linux)

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks ! Loco.Lucky9 &Brooko

I haven’t really had success yet But I have made progress and learned a lot thanks to you guys . I did get into sgfxi but had a lot of failures I did see the new drivers but was unable to install them . I had determined 64 Bit was more trouble than its worth for a Nebie as Chrome does not load and adobe flash fails .

I am switching back to Mepis 11.0 32 Bit as it at least found some of the Nvidia drivers I am currently running the 388 updates when done I am again going to try out your suggestions .If you have any others at this point they are more than welcome !

Thanks Ken

Ken

If you're going to reinstall - use the 11 beta - but use unetbootin to prepare a bootable USB key. That will get you past the current issues with black screens booting a live-dvd. When you boot from the USB key - choose the nvidia option. If it boots successfully, and you then install, it will automatically bring the 3D accelerated nvidia driver into the install - that's then one thing you don't need to worry about.

You'll probably have better luck with UNetbootin. It's in the Community Repos. Just enable the CR and install with Synaptic. Plug in your USB and delete its contents. Do not unmount it. Then run UNetbootin, chose the ISO install, point it at your 10.9.88.iso, and turn it loose. In about two minutes it will be done. It doesn't get any easier.
