Post Can't boot live cd on IBM Netvista 6790 22u - hangs
I've tried variation of MEPIS, Antix, Ubuntu, Mint and Qimo. I had Qimo installed and couldn't get past kernal panic messages until I switched from usb to PS2 mouse & ketboard. Iput Win Me & hardware seems ok. What I want to do is install Linux and kids games, browser, Abiword on a distro that 5 and 8 year old kids can use. I'm thinking a boot option might be the answer. It has a small Vanta card so I can't substitute a regular card. Thanks.

According to your info list, the 6790 22u only has 128MB Ram. That's not enough for MEPIS. You might get Antix to run if you have a swap partition on the hard drive.

I think you're stuck with the VESA option for video. nv didn't work any better for that card and the nvidia driver doesn't support it anymore.

If it is stuck at 128MB ram, I think Puppy Linux , Feather Linux or Damn Small Linux would give you better performance. Antix runs well with 256MB, OK with 192MB but with only 128MB it slows down.

Post Re: Can't boot live cd on IBM Netvista 6790 22u - hangs
I wonder if the CD Drive is just a bit flaky. I've had drives that appeared to read CDs OK from an installed system, but would hang up with "sector not found" errors while trying to boot from one. And I think that machine is too old to boot from USB (most USB 1.1 machines can't).

Do you have any OS installed?

Becky,

I have two NetVista 6790 G11; both had the same problem you mentioned. While troubleshooting, I installed regular size graphics cards and kept the system top lid off. Eventually, I located some old Nvidia RIVA TNT2/64 AGP cards. I'm sure there are better choices out there. It took me a while to locate these slim models. I believe I got them on eBay. Sorry... I don't have any spares left.

These units have 768MB RAM. I use them in my shop to test numerous live distros and to show my customers what Linux can do. Quite often, I have one playing a movie and the other doing side-by-side mimics of Windows XP. Right now, one unit has Mepis 8.5 and the other has PC Linux OS Gnome. I do recall have a very difficult time getting Ubuntu to work.

Thanks everybody,I know the cd is flaky, I know it can't boot from usb. I had Qimo 2 which would be fine but being a fool, I installed Windows Millenium when I got kernel panic errors from usb keyboard and mouse. I'll see if I have a spare video card and cd rom. No problems installing Windows though.

You might run a cleaner disk through the CD drive a few times before giving up on it. A dirty drive will give problems if it's booting a Linux LiveCD/DVD where it won't when booting a Windows disk or just accessing something.

You might check your BIOS for a 'Legacy USB'-type option. It might help the USB peripherals. I use USB to PS2 adapters myself.

Good suggestions lucky9. I think finding a disk cleaner will be easier than finding a spare drive and video card. This computer has been moved around quite a bit since it left my house and was used by a smoker for a while. I have several adaptors for usb mouse to ps2. Are there adapters for keyboards too? The specs of the machine are fine for a kids computer but the hardware seems to be questionable now- worse than a few days ago.

A PS/2 to USB adapter is universal I'm pretty sure. The disadvantage of PS/2 is that they use a hardware interrupt.

On one of my optical drives I had to (with the tray open) blow some air (from about 7 or 8 inches) inside. I used short puffs. Then reran the cleaner disk three times. That optical drive was still working two years later when I upgraded optical drives.
I try to use a day of the week to run a cleaner disk through both of my optical drives. That's more often than the 10 hours of use the manufacturers spec.

I noticed this in another thread.

The Plop boot manager allows you to burn a small (<250KB - not MB, KB!) Plop CD with just a minimal boot manager that allows USB installs on old USB 1.1 equipment.

I just used it to test M11b2 on my old (circa 2001) Compaq Armada laptop. It hasn't enough RAM (192MB) to run M11 properly but the Plop CD allowed my to load it from USB flawlessly.
