IMHO I don't think a swap partition is necessary if you have >2 GB RAM and a light enough Desktop Environment.

Are you talking about this entry in the wiki:

If so, what part is giving you problems. I've been using an encrypted /home partition using this method for a couple of years on my laptop that I travel with. I recently upgraded to M11 and was able to easily set it up to use the partition without any issues.

A friend's computer is running antiX11 on a P4 with 256MB without a swap. It runs, but sssslllloooowwww. Mepis 11 wouldn't boot from the usb, I seem to have a problem with the antiX partition manager, so the next shot is hardware. I'm waiting on an IDE/usb adapter to write a new disk.

So, depends on what you need in terms of speed and responsiveness.

Well, a P4 with only 256M of ram will probably seem very slow even with a swap. But running without one with so little memory is only going to make it slower I would imagine.

I agree with ME2011 though. I run without a swap partition on my laptop with 4G of ram. I haven't noticed any issues or slowdowns. When I did have one enabled it looked like it was never being used, at least according to the system monitor.
