Hi all,

As the titles says, my mic doesn't work. I have a laptop, dell inspiron 1525. Sound has always worked, but the mic never had (it only worked when I had windows, a long time ago).

I looked in the no sound wiki for my driver (here). Since my modinfo soundcore command does give an output, I suppose I don't have to recompile the kernel, but I'm not sure.

Please, I really need to use the mic. Any help in this is much appreciated.

open up the mixer in kmix and play with the different sliders. often, the volumes for a particular channel are low or muted.

Oh, I had forgotten to mention the Kmixer issue. For some reason, when I go to the main menu, click on Multimedia, and then choose Kmixer, the program won't start. The icon jumps and a minimized window loads for a while, then both disappear.

alsamixer does work. I just opened it and realized that if you pres F4, you are directed to the capture control. There, I gave volume to some channels and now the mic seems to work with the arecord -d 10 /tmp/test-mic.wav / aplay /tmp/test-mic.wav commands.

I still have to try it on Skype or something like that... But I'm confident It'll work.

I'm guessing that KMix might already be running. You can check in System Activity {simultaneously press the Ctrl+Esc keys} to see if it shows an open kmix process.

You might have accidentally removed the System Tray where the KMix icon resides. If the system tray is missing, you can't see that Kmix is running and you will get that bit with the icon jumping and bouncing around because it won't let you open another instance of KMix.

Indeed, that was the case. I've restored the kmix icon and everything's alright now. Thanks!

I just had to bump and old thread to say thanks. My mic wasn't working in Skype but a quick search turned up this thread. I went into Kmix, and just like the original poster it didn't open. Found it was open in the tool bar. Turned up the Mic volume to 30db and Skype works. Search can be great feature sometimes. And the forum is always awesome.
