Post Need help getting sound to work in M11
We installed M11 on 12 new computers for our community lab. We seem to have two audio controllers on our motherboard. I have tried to search and see how to get our sound working, but am not knowlledgeable enough to understand some things. Here is output from different list commands.

But I stopped short of doing the script as I wanted someone who knew what was going on to see if I needed to run this script or do something else.

Then post output of: cat $HOME/.asoundrc

Edit the file to select your preferred sound device and restart alsa:

sudo service alsa-utils restart

Your sound should be working now.

i'm sure you tried this, but this needs to be asked... have you tried fussing around with ALL of the volume controls in kmixer?

Also, only one sound device should be enabled. Pick one and disable the other in the BIOS. (I believe the AMD sound chip has caused problems for others.

I have tried to to set kmix, but haven't met with success. The volume always shows 0%. The mute button is always checked on at boot time. But unchecking it doesn't change anything.
This motherboard has the new EFI bios and I didn't see anyway to do anything with the sound.

sounds like the two cards are conflicting, which should clear up if you can find the disable feature as lucky suggested.

also, have you checked if a bios firmware upgrade is available?

Could there be a jumper on the mobo to disable onboard sound card?

topher - Is this with the ASUS F1A75-V PRO motherboards? The spec for that shows a Realtek ALC892 sound chip, which doesn't seem to tie in with your outputs.

I understand that the Asus EFI BIOS normally shows in EZ mode. To get at sound chip settings you need to select Advanced mode. (This is from the manual - I haven't seen this for real yet).

I went into advanced mode and the choices were:
HD Audio Device: Enabled or Disabled
Front Panel Type: AC97 or HD
SPDIF Out Type: SPDIF or HDMI
Disabling the audio didn't work and Microsoft had no sound.
Choosing any of the other four choices didn't make any difference - no sound.in Mepis.
KMix shows:
HD-Audio Generic - IEC958
HD-Audio Genric - shows the sliders (master, headphones, front, surround, center, LFE)
Since Saist has built a computer using this board, this may be a question I should point to him.

I believe there have been reports of HDMI causing problems. Disable that along with the HD Audio Device (you can toggle it to see if that makes a difference along with the SPDIF being set).

I guess I am going to have to run the script to set up an .asoundrc file. I have played around with the bios settings and all Kmix settings that I could and never hit the right combination to get sound working. Here is the script:

Is there someone who understands this and could tell me that all it does is create the .asoundrc file? I don't want to mess the system up by running something that says it will do one thing and then do something else.
