Uncle Tightwad used to do that sort of thing for family and other folks, only to find out later that they had traded it for a lawn mower, or gave it away and bought themselves a shiny new OEM low-end POS. Yesterday I happily attended the big barbecue. While the burgers were on the grill I went into the house where the computer was and tried kmathern's suggested cheat codes with some measure of success. Thank you very much. The best I could get was 1280x720. It boots up with the Desktop off to the right and covering only about 3/4 of the screen, and slightly too low. The monitor's automatic adjustment didn't help. However, while it looks funny, it's sharp and perfectly usable. But then, if I go to System Settings, as soon as I click "Display" it goes dark for a few seconds and then returns full-screen at 1280x720. This "solution" is not good, but is way better than what was there before. We had a chat. She doesn't want to buy another computer, does want to keep Linux, and would be happy to upgrade the video and add RAM. So that's where it stands. I appreciate the suggestions from everyone. I'm off to search for an AGP 4x card and RAM.
