 Lenny Xserver-Xorg-Core Upgrade Goes Bad
I upgraded xserver-xorg-core to 2:1.4.2-10lenny3 yesterday. When I rebooted this morning, I was informed that compositing was turned off by another application. I restarted compositing using System Settings and verified that OpenGL was selected; however, none of the KDE 4.3 compositing effects worked -- I had a "flat" desktop.
I restored my system from a backup partition image and now the compositing effects work again. I suspect the upgrade messed up xorg.conf, but I would like to know exactly what happened and how to fix it if I apply the upgrade again. In the meantime, I pinned the xerver-xorg-core package to the previous version.

I think you just need to run sgfxi again to rebuild the nvidia driver for the updated xserver-xorg-core package. I believe the nvidia driver (in addition to being built for the kernel you are using) is built to a specific version of xserver-xorg-core. I know sgfxi does a test for the xorg version to see if it has changed since the nvidia driver was previously built/installed.

Too bad that a little pop-up does not indicate that after installation, huh?

That makes sense. When I have some time to spare, I'll try upgrading xserver-xorg-core again and then re-install the NVidia driver.
Thanks.

I'm curious if this affects users that install the nvidia driver using the Mepis X-Windows Assistant.
I don't recall needing to reinstall the nvidia driver when it was installed using that method and xserver-xorg updates came along. I also don't recall Warren releasing updated driver packages because of xserver-xorg updates.

I used the x windows assistant on Mepis 11a3, runs smooth, no probs at all, only needed to adjust the xorg a little cause my BenQ monitors weren't fully recognized …
But i will give the update a try and let you know

I have not installed A3, to use the Proprietary Video Card drivers, using the sgfxi script... Only experimented with the both the 32-bit and 64-bit livecds...
I had a black screen in Mepis 8.0.15 this morning also as reported and resolved...
Before the afternoon is finished I hope to have a 64-bit A3 install completed and will see how the sgfxi script works, and update this posting...

I also found compositing disabled today and ran sgfxi to fix it. I noticed it blacklisted nouveau and also removed it from initrd as part of the process. Anyway, my cube is spinning again, so I'm happy.-)

A post on the Debian forums said that the reason the xserver-xorg-core upgrade breaks openGL for the proprietary drivers is that it redoes the symlinks to the openGL libraries to point to the open xorg versions. That sounds likely, based on what I have seen. It may be possible to repair the links without smxi by running the
su -c 'update-alternatives --config libGL.so.1' su -c 'update-alternatives --config libglx.so'
and choosing the nvidia option. (not the one in diversions)for nvidia cards....don't know if this will work for fglrx...
and a reboot may be necessary.
