 Screen Resolution stuck at 800x600
hi

I have an Acer Aspire One D260 fitted with Intel GMA 950 graphics card.I'm using Mepis 8.5 which seems to be running fine in all respects apart from it's/my ability to get the right secreen resolution of 1024x600. I've tried all the various solutions provided on this and other forums without any success. I've tried numerous suggestions notably those listed below:-

xdrvr=intel cheat code
amending the xorg.conf file (from vesa to intel)
using the i810 driver
reinstall of xserver-xorg package

Either I'm missing something or I'm not doing it correctly.

I've tried the netbook on quite a few Linux distributions and only Mepis gives me this problem.

Can anyone help.

From your post, I'm guessing your not completely new to Linux.

The problem with 8.5 is that it's based on lenny which is now pretty old. It has an old version of X, and for reasonably modern hardware (esp netbooks), it doesn't exactly play nicely with newer intel graphics hardware. YMMV.

I know MEPIS 11 is only at Alpha stage (10.9.8 ) - but I'm guessing you may get better compatability with it - it's based on Squeeze, with newer X.

If you do try this route, I'd opt for clean install - but when first booting from USB, you'll need enter xdrvr=intel at grub screen. Detection is not 100% yet - but Warren's working on it. It works pretty well with my ASUS 1015PED. Might be worth a shot.

Thanks for your reply Brooko

As i'm looking for a stable distribution I'd prefer to stick with Mepis 8.5 although I would try Mepis 11 if all else failed. Is there any way i could use another repository to get the latest package/s I need.

The other thing you can do (sticking with 8.5 first) is amend xorg.conf to specify resolutions.

In the "screen" section, you'll have something that looks like this (may not be exact):
Quote:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24

SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection

SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection

SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection

SubSection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection

EndSection

Change each "800x600" to "1024x600" and see if that helps (restart X afterward). If it doesn't, then the Alpha release is your best bet.

BTW - MEPIS 11 - although at Alpha stage now, is expected to be complete and stable by early Jan (that's my guess anyway).

HI

I gave it a try but no luck.

I've decided to call it aa day on 8.5 and I'm giving Antix at try. I might have better luck with their different repositories.

Thanks for your help.

Something else to check and look at is in the /etc/x11/xorg.conf is look something like this

Quote:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "intel"
BoardName "unknown"
and change what ever is next to Driver to intel. I believe there is a couple of instances in the file. Change all of them to intel.

It worked for me on my HP laptop.

When originally booting on my AAO D250 I set res with xres=1024x600. I am running the i810 driver after using smxi.

If you want something stable, give 8.0 a try with the live CD. I realized it is older, but my experience with KDE 4 is not as good as 3 for some different graphics cards.

If it works you could use it until 11 is stable- maybe.
