Post Graphics problem with new Intel graphics chip on MEPIS 8.5
Scenario:
- New desktop machine (January 2011), with Intel core2duo cpu and Intel graphics chip, and 4gb ram.
- MS Windows reports:
Intel Q45/Q43 Express Chipset
Intel GMA 450
Intel video bios
128 MB memory
Refresh 60 Hz.
- iiyama prolite 22" TFT screen, with native mode = 1680x1050.
- MEPIS 8.5 installed on sda5, with screen set as Generic LCD, LCD Panel 1680x1050.

In this scenario MEPIS 8.5 32-pae offers me no more than 1280x1024 resolution. This is with the vesa driver. If I set the driver as "intel", MEPIS fails to load, and the screen protests with a message saying: out of range.

The full screen resolution of 1680x1050 is available in Windows XP on sda1 on this hardware.

The full screen resolution of 1680x1050 was available for the same screen in MEPIS 8.0 on an older machine (dating from about 2005), which had an Nvidia card, for which I had installed the appropriate proprietary driver.

Questions:

Are my new motherboard and intel graphics chip simply too recent for the Lenny xorg-intel driver to provide full support? Will I (probably) get the full resolution from MEPIS 11, with the Squeeze xorg-intel driver? (If so, I will probably live with 1280x1024 on MEPIS 8.5 until there is an actual release of MEPIS 11).

Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes,
Peter Stone

Peter, have you tried using smxi & sgfxi scripts to install a newer driver?.

Thanks. I'll try sgfxi.

No doubt this will be a learning exercise, which hopefully will have useful longer-term value, as well as addressing the immediate problem.

My advice - use the latest beta. But write the iso to USB thumb drive (use either unetbootin or this wiki entry - http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php? ... y#Syslinux - the syslinux bit). Booting from the live environment from the thumb drive avoids a lot of the bugs with the live-DVD.

MEPIS 11 gives you newer kernel, newer X, and newer intel driver. After you install - I still used sgfxi (on my netbook) to reset the latest intel driver - because it helps with openGL.

smxi won't update the Lenny intel driver, but will configure your setup to use it correctly.

Mepis 8.0 and 8.5 support the GMA45 series chips, but don't automatically recognize it. My last two laptops have used the chip at 1280x800 and 1366x768 resolutions. The trick is when running the LiveCD, boot it with the GRUB command line (at the bottom of the GRUB menu)

xdrvr=intel

just add it to the other commands you see there. If successful, use the Mepis xwindows asssitant to copy the working xorg.conf to your installed version.

You say you are editing xorg.conf to use intel, but are you doing a full reboot after fixing it? I also found that to be necessary.

If you do want better 3D eye-candy with openGLon the desktop, Mepis 11 is the way to go, though. The Intel driver is much improved. The GM45 also has an unfixable problem with video tearing when watching movies with the Lenny driver, but that is fixed in the Squeeze version. Video tearing is the appearance of horizontal divisions between two different frames in the middle of a video movie, such as in fast-moving flames or action. Once you notice it, it's annoying. You can get rid of it for most Intel cards in Lenny by using the overlay output driver instead of the textured, but the GM45 just has the textured output. :(

Neither xdrvr=intel nor sgfxi solved the problem. In both cases I still got an out-of-range message and a frozen machine.

But using Mepis 11 beta 1 succeeds and gives me the desired 1680x1050 resolution.

I think that the Lenny driver must have a problem with the relevant Intel graphics chip which is more or less insoluble.

Thanks to all who advised. I am now marking this thread as solved.

Best wishes,
Peter Stone
