Post Webcams you'd recommend to me
Tell me what webcam you'd recommend to me. I've never had a webcam and might get one soon. I'd only use it for Skype, etc. My desktop tower is ~ 7 years old. In my computer, I only have M11 (32 bit) as the sole OS. [And I also have a laptop around the same age and also only have M11 (32 bit) as the sole OS, so a webcam that could be used on my desktop's CRT monitor and also on the laptop would be swell. I use the desktop far more than I use the laptop.]

Here's info on the kernel in the desktop tower and in the laptop:
# cat /proc/version
Linux version 3.0-3.dmz.1-liquorix-686 (MEPIS 3.0-5)
(maintainer@mepiscommunity.org) (gcc version 4.4.5 (Debian 4.4.5-8)

On the desktop tower: P4 3.00GHz; 2 GB in memory

The sound electronics are Intel's and are integrated into the mobo.

From output of # lspci -v :
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 04) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: IBM Device 02d8
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at d0100000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
I/O ports at 3800 [size=8]
Memory at c0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
Memory at d0180000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]
Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2
Kernel driver in use: i915

.............

Kindly state the model number of any make you recommend. I'd probably get a webcam in the lower end to and including the mid-level price range.

Thanks

Can you believe it.. the box went out the door when I did the warranty over box cleanup session back in january.. grr.

I believe it's the c300, purchased it when I was still on the old computer which was a much lighter machine that ran win2000pro on the side even! Mind you .. it did NOT work with win2000pro, it wanted at least XP, but worked like a charm on mepis 8.5 I believe it still was back then and now 11.

Here is some info: http://reviews.cnet.com/webcams/logitec ... col;subnav

I have had good luck with the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000, except have not got the internal mic working. I am using the 3.0.0-6.dmz.1-liquorix-686 kernel in M11 upgraded to KDE 4.6.5. I do not skype. But I get an excellent image with guvcview and cheese at reasonable resolutions.

sps7,

Like Rich, I use the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000. I've used it on two different machines with M8.5 and M11, on ATI HD5770 GPU and on Intel Mobile 4 Series embedded graphics with Skype, Cheeze, etc. No fuss, no hassles with drivers.

Search is a wonderful thing; thanks to this post, it looks like I'm going to get a Logitech Pro 9000 for use with M11 and my HP desktop. Do you have to install anything? Is the setup easy? (That's a relatively loaded question!) Thanks in advance.
