Install the Linux drivers and plugin from http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/?OSC=LX or http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/ using alien.

At this point, the iscan utility will only run as root, and Vuescan will not detect any installed scanner software.
Following installation, execute the following command as root:



where XXX and xxx correspond to the libusb address of your scanner, which you may find by running sane-find-scanner. (You probably need to have sane-util installed to have this command available.)

Note the chmod command is modified from the one contained in the iscan manual. I get the correct command here: http://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Scanners#Epson

Following this you should be able to use this scanner via iscan or Vuescan as user. Just make sure the user is added to the scanner group. You may check and edit this group setting using KUser.

I have had good luck with xsane for scanning from my hp photosmart c3100. You can get that program from the synaptic and it should find your scanner for you. No need to run as root.
