MEPIS 10.9.88 beta #1 released - bug reports &feedback here
Installed with unetbootin flash key. Installation was nominal. The new localization mods to the installer look like they've always been there - good job!
I have the same 3 periods of freezing up right after boot as the modem-manager opens & closes /dev/ttyS1, S2 & S3, just as in alpha 4. Annoying.
After the freezes are over everything looks good so far.

Tim --
What about separating out hardware and software bug reports/feedback? If you like that, then can you change your subject and make an additional post?

Re: MEPIS 10.9.8 alpha #5 released - bug reports & feedback
I'm not sure it's that easy to classify. Is a GUI freeze hardware or software? It appears the modem-manager TTY freeze ups are a kernel locking bug in 2.6.36. Possibly another reason for Warren to go to 2.6.37 - if they have fixed the issue - that's not clear at the moment. Or possibly the behavior that causes the locking could be avoided in modem-manager. It doesn't happen on my laptop because the Comm port hardware is not "whitelisted" so modem-manager doesn't try to open & close the ports.

I don't know if I have a GUI freeze but I have the same problem on Alpha 4 and 5. I can't type in my password, after I have installed it, so I can't log in. I tried Reisers and EXT-3.

So that Warren will have some clue, please describe your hardware (in signature is easiest).

System Settings -- Lost & Found -- Printers??? Touchpad??? C
Running a fresh install of A5 on this P4/1024MB Vaio laptop. Had to immediately install the kde-config-touchpad app so I could fix the agonizingly slow touchpad mouse. Went to System Settings> Input Devises, and it wasn't there. Looked all over, went back and reinstalled the package, installed a couple other packages, still couldn't find it. Almost slammed the lid in disgust, but then just happened to scroll all the way to the bottom of System Settings and found a listing for the touchpad -- under Lost & Found!!! Along with Printers and CDs!!!
I mean, c'mon. That's just plain silly.

Re: System Settings -- Lost & Found -- Printers??? Touchpad?
They explain Lost and Found as the place for applications that have a category which doesn't fit into any existing menus. I would say touchpad configuration fits under input devices. So it is a bit odd it is put there. Just one of those little quirks. Nothing to get upset about. Patience.

Re: System Settings -- Lost & Found -- Printers??? Touchpad?
I know what it's there for. Heck, it would be a stretch, but I could even see how touchpad might go there. But Printers??? Audio CDs??? This is the kind of stuff that drives me crazy. Short trip, Ill grant you, but still...

Can the OP please change the title to read MEPIS 10.9.88 alpha #5 released - bug reports & feedback here
Currently, it's MEPIS 10.9.8 alpha #5 released - bug reports & feedback here
Just reloaded onto my netbook, looking fine for starters, re-installing all my favorite apps as I type, saved my apt cache so marginal download required, only 1.6MB out of 363MB, gotta love that feature of Linux.
