Re: MEPIS 10.9.90 beta #2 released - bug reports & feedback
I have nVidia video, it uses the newest driver, I use SMXI to install the driver.
I choose the usb boot, I was using unetbootin, I hit the tab key and choose vga=794 because I have a 1280x1024 monitor and booted to kdm, logged in as demo and started the install, I choose ext4 and to keep my /home/jimmy and choose to install grub to the root partition, all went as expected with no problem.
Now tell me what are you guy's doing wrong?

Is your system identical to mine? Why would you assume we are doing something wrong?

Re: MEPIS 10.9.90 beta #2 released - bug reports & feedback
Seems there are still loads of choices for X, using the LiveDVD. Surely the choices on LiveDVD could be reduced by simply calling lspci | grep VGA | egrep -wo '(Intel|ATI|nVidia)' from within initramfs/busybox Grep these common choices and then just auto-select cq boot the appropriate option, otherwise defaulting to vesa (with the "xdrvr=" override explained under Help (F1). Maybe include legacy mga/sis/via cards too, or else cater for them (grep etc) in the install script.
Would need a static /usr/bin/lspci already under initramfs/bin for it to work ...plus lspci's libs also statically built-in under intramfs/lib To find those, ldd /usr/bin/lspci and then cp -a (for symlinks) or cp -Lp for actual libs), compile all into initramfs and just auto-detect the graphics aka no live media choices.
Older (and newer) nVidia cards would still not work OOTB, but could do away with 4 or 5 choices at LiveDVD boot screen for 90% of userbase, and use F1 (prominent reference) for the exceptions.

Older Sony Vaio laptop P4-2.8MHz/1024MB/ATI graphics/Atheros wireless.
Booted 32-bit ISO to UNetbootin-created thumb drive. Chose Slow/USB boot option -- desktop came up almost immediately after KDM login. Network Manager detected network, supplied it with the security key, let KWallet do its thing, and was connected immediately.
That's as far as I've gotten, but very first impressions are excellent. Will be installing right away.
Will report on desktop experience with FX5200 and dual monitors later.

It has been a very frustrating development cycle for those of us unable to boot, including me. After the recent failure, the heat level was raised. It is a little harder to detect humor under the circumstances. However, if unable to boot M11 is the worse that happens to me, it is a trivial matter.

When in doubt, just assume that Jimmy is being a doofus. Same with my posts, too. DBeckett, on the other hand... him you gotta watch out for.

Don't make me come after you. Posting from an installed system on the same laptop. Typical yawner ten minute MEPIS install. Will need to tweak to my satisfaction. At least two things come immediately to mind: one, the Elegance theme with Crystal window decorations is gorgeous (although I don't care for the artwork -- that's just 'cause I'm an old fart and it's too darn "fancy" for my tastes), and two, the touchpad works as it should OOTB. (With previous releases, pointer movement was agonizingly slow, and required installing the kde-touchpad-config package to set things right.) All in all, things look real good from where I sit with this particular machine. The desktop with FX5200 graphics and dual monitors is always a bit more problematic. May be a day or two before I get to that.

Tried the classic xorg config this time. Boots exactly the same way as the default. Adding a 1 to the boot line after hitting tab same with default I mentioned earlier enables me to get to the demo login in the end.
