Re: MEPIS 10.9.90 beta #2 released - bug reports & feedback
@cookdav, I'm guessing that your "nVidia NV34 (GeForce FX-500)" is actually a FX5200 which is the same card that I use {inxi -G reports my FX5200 card as a NV34}.
I'm able to use the FX5200 with M11 so know it can be done.
A couple of boot ideas
#1) Use the Default_no_Xorg_preconfig boot option. Press the Tab key and add nouveau.modeset=0 to the kernel options This gets me to the KDM login and KDE4 desktop with the vesa driver having been auto-selected. The display resolution and refresh aren't the best, but I can fix them later on with sgfxi after having installed to harddrive.
#2) Use the NVIDIA_Xorg_config boot option. Press the Tab key and change the drvr=nvidia to drvr=nv. Again this gets me to to the KDM login and KDE4 desktop, but using the 'nv' driver instead of 'vesa'. As with method #1, the display resolution and refresh still aren't the best (but imo better than vesa) and you can fix them later with sgfxi.

Re: MEPIS 10.9.90 beta #2 released - bug reports & feedback
@kmathern: Oops, a typo...I must have missed the '2' key...your guess is 100% correct...it's an FX-5200! I tried both your suggestions...the 'nouveau' one looked the closest, but there's more going on...it is indeed some 'startx' anomoly/problem. On that 'nouveau.modeset=0' one, the flashing underscore char never re-appears, so it looked like it was gonna take, but not quite...just get the blank screen raster and then nothing. @richb: Right on, Rich...that solved it! (Should have known...as I did see 'kdm' get launched, based on one of the latter kernel-cmd lines, but for whatever reason, the 'kdm' isn't able to get the xserver running, whereas the manual launch of startx from run-level-3 solves it!) [The installer is now happily doing it's thing on the desktop-machine, as I write from the laptop.] EDIT/update: The desktop-system installed fine and is now working! (I love M11/KDE4.5. Production-quality, once you get past getting the Live-DVD to boot graphically, so you can do the install! ) Thanks for the help, guys!

I ran some memory tests tonight, Mepis 11.0 a clean install and updated, against a squeeze install wth KDE 4.5 and a Liquorix 2.6.37-10 kernel, notice any difference. Memory Mepis 11.0-32, default updated clean install ================================= Squeeze With KDE 4.5 and Liquorix 2.6.37-10 kernel. =================================

Re: MEPIS 10.9.90 beta #2 released - bug reports & feedback
I've developed an issue with python since the last round of updates. CPU stays pegged at 50% on one core. The process isn't using much memory (9mb). Occurs immediately after logging in but does not happen every time.
Suggestions?
Edit: 32 bit Beta2

Does "top" in the terminal show the guilty process?

Sure enough does: hp-systray HP hasn't burned me since my Windows days. Guess they had to make up for it where they could...

Re: MEPIS 10.9.90 beta #2 released - bug reports & feedback
Here I am again, late blooming. I have tried the live 32 bit disk on an old AMD slot A machine, will not boot.
Tried on a single core AMD 64 with a 21" CRT monitor, it booted up, #2 does not like my ATI card.
Tried on my Quad four AMD 64 with 28" digital monitor, it only would boot in the default mode, the rest went into lockup. #2 does not like the ATI card.
I now have #2 loaded on the Quad four in 32 bit mode. Things run slow and jerky.

I think the boot failure on the AMD slot A machine is because it doesn't support SSE instructions. See a similar thread here: viewtopic.php?p=258650#p258650

Yes that one is for a socket A CPU, mine is older than that one. This was a test more for the thread for "What should be the minimum stuff for M11 to run with" or something like that. I think richb is going crazy keeping up with these two threads. I am just reporting back, I have lots of older machines to try M11 on.
