W2k3 as BDC for a Samba PDC? Help and hints wanted!

Here you can ask questions about how to set up servers in MEPIS and ask about software and hardware related to it. You can post tutorials relating to this, also.

W2k3 as BDC for a Samba PDC? Help and hints wanted!

#1 Postby mstibs » Thu Apr 09, 2009 5:14 am

Folks, I've got a problem, where I already searched for hours to find some howtos but found nothing.
:linuxlove:
The situation:
We got a Samba on Mepis PDC controlled school network (works like a charm) of 120 W98-Vista machines. There exists one separate W2k3 server which acts as a PDC for one classroom with special software requirements. Via a second nic and some routing entries it's linked to the main network (shoveling the web traffic from the room to the central proxy with the content filters - no flash games anymore ... har har). Now we want this separate classoom join back the main domain without losing the W2k3 server (it cost us way too much to ditch).

The problem:
My first idea was to setup the W2k3 server as BDC for the Samba PDC that it authenticates against the Samba user database.

The question:
Did some of you guys already test such a setup (or a similar one), if so which experiences do you have and which hints can you give? It would be very nice, too, to point me to some online-readings covering the topic.

Thanks in advance!

Maybe you can try to use samba (http://www.mrp3.com/windows-to-unix-samba.html) and webmin (http://www.webmin.com/cgi-bin/search_third.cgi?search=download)... they have some howtos on their websites... However, I haven't found any of them user-friendly...
I'm using samba... 3.5.4... and webmin...

For some reason, my first mepis machine came up as a bdc and not a pdc... I don't have a windows server anywhere...

It is also my understanding that you need to setup a DNS server (BIND9 - is the current flavor) first...
Setup your own domain (http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-866991.html)
For Samba there is also a page for webmin modules... One module named "Samba Machine Maintainer" says that it is specifically designed to help maintain Samba's configured as PDCs.

That's what I've discovered so far... I hope that it helps...

I read the date... but, I didn't see any replies... I was looking for a solution to a similar problem and found this orphaned request for help... I figured that he might still be looking for an answer, as am I, and from my web searches, so are a lot of other people...

So, I just posted what I've found so far... hoping that it might help someone...
I also figured that if he has a checkmark in that box to notify him should anyone reply, then when he checks his email... we might get a response from him and he might call it solved... :linuxlove:

Just a theory though...

We're just not used to them being that much in the past. Usually they're resolved before that long. So maybe someone will take a look that didn't and be able to help.
