Post kde4 effects in mepis 8.5 slow
Kde4 desktop usability effects are quite slow in comparison to kubuntu 9.10. I am using mepis on my laptop which has a intel graphics card.
Is there a driver difference. Is there a method to speed up the effects.

Go into the desktop effects settings and choose openGL instead of xrender. Xrender is the default because it works with more graphic cards.

... after using sgfxi to install the graphics driver for your GPU.

i have configured kde4 to use opengl of rendering, but still the performance is not good.
I remember i had similar issue with ubuntu 9.04. Something to do with intel graphic driver and kernel mode driver.

Ah yes, I know what you mean. The X server that is shipped with Lenny (ergo MEPIS) is unfortunately a little old. I got the X server from testing, and that one performs a lot better.

That being said, I DO NOT recommend it. It can go wrong, it'll drag in a number of dependencies that can cause incompatibilities, so don't do it if you don't know what you are doing.

MEPIS 8.5 pushes Lenny to the limits. It is meant as a transition between 8.0 and a full blown KDE4 implementation with all bells and whistles in MEPIS 10. Looks like you are out of luck regarding 3D effects. But believe me when I say that MEPIS is a heck of a lot more stable than Kubuntu.

What Intel card do you have? It was very acceptable with OpenGL and my 845 Intel graphics card, and default X server.

Check out this thread about using xrender and the raster graphics option, perhaps that will help: http://www.mepislovers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=25723

No cube or 3D effects, but video plays well, and transparency and fades seem better.
