Post MEPIS - Next Release (rough outline)
Hi all.

Had a few questions recently regarding the next release - hopefully this will answer some of your queries:

  • Warren believes that Debian will hard freeze squeeze around Sept, and actually release it around New Year.
  • Next version of MEPIS will be numbered 11 - and is likely to go final around January 2011.
  • Warren has a pre-alpha running but is not happy with it yet. He;'s not happy with a couple of stability issues and wants to solve them before we get a chance to test drive it.
  • New release will be squeeze based with 2.6.35 or 2.6.36 kernel (depending on stability) and Firefox 4.
  • If everything goes well - he could have an alpha ready for release later this month - but at this stage he cannot say either way. A lot depends on solving current stability issues.

Above is what I do know - direct from Warren. What I will still need to start organising is art, docs, + any community dev programs. Hope to start discussing those as soon as I have some time (within next two weeks).

Will post back once I get more info.

Installing grub with latest squeeze grub-common is broken in present msystem and minstall. Do you know if Warren has fixed this?

As posted in another thread, if squeeze stays with KDE 4.4, I believe MEPIS really ought to bring KDE 4.5. 4.5 is primarily a bug fix release, so it will likely be more stable than 4.4

+1 for KDE 4.5
We really should aim to provide a DE that is not a the very end of it's development cycle and using a bugfix version is a good idea IMHO

Hi Brooko,
The Art team is trying to wake up after a long sleep. I just sent the other members a message to see if they are ready for some serious work.

Last time I communicated with Warren about Grub - he advised that unless Grub2 got a hole lot more user friendly, he'd probably look to stay with Grub-Legacy.

Personally - I've been using Grub2 for last 3 months on my netbook - with no issues - but it's his call at the moment. Things may change.

At a guess - I'd say he'll probably do initial releases (alpha/beta) with whatever KDE version exists in Squeeze. However, if a newer version is released in time for MEPIS final (even if it's upstream), I would not be surprised to see Warren backport it. And if he didn't, the CR could - because at least we'd have compatible libraries again

Anti - I haven't seen his pre-alpha yet. He did mention various issues with the live-cd, so that may have been part of it. When he deems first alpha ready, his initial thought was to release it to a few early testers first - then get fully into a development cycle. I'll have a clearer picture in another couple of weeks.

I like it. Good ol' reliable grub-legacy, and the latest stable DTE.

I'm saving my pennies and hoping my current tired old kit will hang together until the new MEPIS is released. That's when I plan on going for a wholesale upgrade across the board: new modern hardware (as high end as I can justify/afford), the latest and greatest MEPIS, and even holding my nose and installing <cough> Windows 7 <cough>.

Of course by just typing this out, I've probably increased the chances of a smoked mobo in the next week by 300%.

I'd say it's a fairly safe bet .....

Will there be a M11 with KDE 3.5?

Just curious, want to be prepared if I have to make the full leap from 3.5 to 4.x
