upwards is not necessarily forward, sometimes you have to back to progress forward, as you say early releases of Mepis used the KDE release number, thing was everyone new what was what, my opinion anyway

If we (Mepis) stick with years it will work fine as near as I can tell, Warren just needs to settle and appears to have done so with the years being used,

Yeah, I guess I could learn to accept a 'name' in addition to the number. But, that seem superfluous, no? One thing is clear...I've been 'poisoned' by the GOOFY names (in Greek, so the 'char-set' is foreign to us "English snobs" ) that the sidux folks produce! [But, then luckily they also supply a number/date-scheme (e.g. 2010-4) or whatever, so you/they know what kit you've installed to start 'rolling-from'. They'll ask you for that for certain support issues.] So, ALSO having a name seems to be of limited utility. [Tho, I guess it DOES allow the 'troops' to have a poll to vote on, of prospective names, so I guess the idea isn't ALL bad.]

Yeah, both Ubuntu and Debian have numbers, but for Debian nobody seems to use them, I find Ubuntu numbering scheme useful, I don't have to remember when Masturbating Monkey was released... For Debian it might work though because the releases are so rare so people will remember that Lenny came before Squeeze...
But yes, numbers are perfectly fine especially if they convey some info.

MM:rofl: [Or, did you mean what Peter Sellers would refer to as "Masturbating Minky"?] Luckily, I moved these new 'smilies' into my list just in time. If we DO go with adding 'names', you're hired to produce the list of candidates... sure beats 'mountain/valleys'.

I can see where names might be a problem for you Eadwine Rose! Didn't you just move up from 6.5 or something?

I never used 6.5 I came from 6.0 even, and before that promepis 2005beta3 or something like that.
And I moved to 8.0 in .. what was it.. 2007 or something? Just looked in Synaptic, May 19th 2007.
I didn't do a THING with the system upgrade/install wise till TWO years after that How's that for consistent
