I think you can make an Image/Clone of the .vdi file for safe-keeping as a backup. There are directions available on the Net. Using Image software to backup a partition is just basic as can be. (the .vdi file is different if What I remember is still relevant)

I've been using the same .vdi for several years, through many installations. It's just a 4GB file. I have a couple of copies of it around here somewhere.

I do have to add that old games like The Sims do work much better on XP. The sound is much less choppy/garbled.
