 Port 53 openShields up says I have port 53 (domain name server) open. Is this something I should be concerned with? It doesn't appear to be important but I thought I'd ask here and get an informed opinion :) Everything else was locked down tight. Thanks, BG

Re: Port 53 open I would stealth it. Any open port could be a security risk. Also, if ports are listed as closed, I would stealth them because closed ports return signals when they are pinged, whereas stealthed ports don't.

Re: Port 53 open do you have a router & firewall between your mepis box and the internet? if not, for the love of all things holy - do.
port 53 is used by dns to resolve ip addresses to host names and shouldn't be showing up on a scan like shields up. |

Re: Port 53 open make sure the firmware is up to date and you should be fine... alternatively, you could use the dd-wrt firmware replacement for enhanced capabilities... but the factory capabilities are probably fine unless you plan on doing some complex, funky stuff...

Re: Port 53 open I have had the WRT54GL for some time and it works fine with the factory defaults. I have upgraded the firmware a couple of times and currently have the latest. It has been a very reliable router/firewall.
