You could try to use the grub boot argument noapic and/or noacpi.
Other than that, you might want to investigate resetting your BIOS to its factory settings or check through it thoroughly to see if there are any options for changing the SATA mode. I am picking that the BIOS has the capability of two or more SATA modes such as native IDE, RAID, or AHCI.
IDE mode gives the simplest level of operation, AHCI gives the best SATA has to offer and RAID enables a soft-raid array, which requires additional drivers at the OS level and not supported by the Mepis Live-Media, though better supported by other packagers live media because they choose to build in support for it.
Mepis will handle AHCI easily just in case you have that option, and if I'm wrong, then hopefully this thread can be of use to somebody else.
