how to transfer data between laptop and desktop
I have an emachine laptop, the mouse scroll pad has just died, it has some other issues and is still under warranty, so I cannot pull the back of it to get at the hard drive before sending it in to Acer for warranty work. I do not want to spend $90 odd dollars buying an external hard drive when I have 2 TB on my desktop available. I have all my IT library on the laptop and am wondering if it is possible to use an RG45 cable to create a network connection. I understand USB is problematic for this sort of thing. The 'highly intelligent' help desk personel at Acer tell me that it is normal for them to reinstall that other OS that I do not use, as part of their Acer care program or something. Which I think translates into English as we will throw your laptop away and send you a new one. If anyone has any suggestions your help would be appreciated.

Can't you use an USB-mouse instead of the scroll pad? Henry

You need a crossover RJ45 cable to network two computers together: http://www.iplocation.net/tools/rj45-wiring.php

Why not just transfer across your network via samba? Dump or link what you want to save into the pre-configured /home/Shared folder, then access it with Dolphin from the desktop.

Re: how to transfer data between laptop and desktop
samba would certainly work. is the transfer rate similar to just using scp or rsync?
