I think that the problem specified below arises from Debian Squeeze, rather than from AntiX 8.5 itself, which probably just imports the problem from Squeeze.

But, in Antix 8.5, with kde-full installed, one can install smb4k from the Squeeze repository. smb4k then runs, but fails with an error message when I try to access my Plextor NAS drive. (Substituting the smb4k from the Mepis 8.5 repository produces a similar result, but with a different error message. But I would not expect a version designed for Lenny to work in Antix 8.5).

In contrast, the Plextor drive can be accessed in antix 8.5 using Dolphin. (The drive can be accessed with smb4k in Mepis 8.0 and 8.5, and - with the Community repository version of samba and smb - in Konqueror in Mepis 8.0 and Dolphin in Mepis 8.5).

This problem is intriguing rather than important. I wonder whether anyone else has similar experiences.

A new version of smb4k, 0.10.8, has now been released by the developer, but only as a tarball, not a deb.

So presumably the Debian developers will be able to create a deb of this for sid, and hopefully for squeeze.

pastone, an alternate to the gui samba tools is webmin. it's web based, self contained and allows you to manage samba and a WHOLE lot more. i find it to be the easiest means of managing samba, but it's also a great tool to remotely manage systems. my keyboard is not working on my main system and i can use my notebook and connect to webmin to manage the main system.

The latest version of smb4k, 0.10.8, does work with antix 8.5, at least if the share is mounted manually.
