Antix 8.5 Provided 1600x1200 But Antix 11 only has 1024x768
Just installed Antix 11 over the top of Antix 8.5. Now the max resolution is 1024x768 where before it was auto-detected at 1600x1200. Have Nvidia Riva TNT video card. and Gateway VX700 CRT monitor. How do I get back to 1600x1200 resolution?

Already tried xrandr and cvt, but xrandr reported an error about not finding the gamma when I tried to add the 1600x1200 resolution settings from cvt for that mode.

The situation with drivers for Nvidia cards got more complicated.
Can you post the output of "cat /proc/cmdline"? There are now four different drivers that work with Nvidia card: vesa, nv, nouveau, and nvidia. It sounds like you might be stuck with vesa or perhaps nv. The exact version of antiX-M11 matters very much. You might be able to tell which driver you are using by doing a "grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf" or "grep Loading /var/log/Xorg.*".
You can use sgfxi (or smxi) to install the nvidia driver which can definitely handle 1600x1200 regardless of what version of antiX-M11 you are using.
If you are using the very latest antiX-M11 then both the nv and nouveau drivers should be available. If the kernel boot line (seen via "cat /proc/cmdline") has "nomodeset" or "nouveau.modeset=0" then you are probably using the nv driver. Get rid of those two parameters (in the Grub menu when you first start the system) and you should get the nouveau driver instead, which should handle 1600x1200.

Follow the directions here: http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php?title=SgfxiPeople are reporting that they have to run sgfxi twice to get things setup correctly. Here are some options to try if needed: http://smxi.org/docs/sgfxi-manual.htm#manual-options

Re: Antix 8.5 Provided 1600x1200 But Antix 11 only has 1024x
mfbaxter,
You have a very old card, circa 1999, and if bitjam's method does not work for you then you will need to run smxi, already included in anitX btw if you have already run smxi and done a du, then you have the latest xorg, 1.10 , nvidia does not work with that version as they (nvidia) have not updated their drivers yet. If that is the case the eaisest method is reinstall antiX and pin xserver-common & xserver-xorg-core to 2.1.9-5. You must run smxi out of x so hit:
ctrl-alt-f1 log in as root smxi hit enter choose opt2 (no du) choose opt7 (cont to graphics) choose opt 4 (oldest nvidia) that will install the 71.86.14 nvidia driver and create an xorg.conf hit enter to continue and follow the prompts. (btw, leave the nouveau.modeset=0 You should be good to go.
edit: Forgot to also say that when you reboot, if you don't have the resolution you desire then you can run Nvidia Xserver settings located at: Menu> System Tools> Nvidia X Server Settings
cheers, ohh

Well, as previously identified, the nVidia driver for my card is indeed incompatible with recent release of the X window system which I found out by performing the sgfxi procedure. However, during the course of the exercise, it created a nice /etc/X11/xorg.conf which cause ANTIX to utilize 1600x1200 video resolution, so this issue is resolved.
Furthermore, hat's off to the distribution and its maintainers as I was able to get my old Zip100 Parallel drive to work flawlessly by simply adding parport_pc and ppa modules to /etc/modules.
Now if someone could just tell me how to configure AntiX so that I can browse the shares on my Windows network, then I will content.
