 goodbye Mepis hello AntiX???
on my Acer Aspire One ZG5 at the moment Ive had a mepis 8 or 8.5 (dont recall, i think i upgraded to 8.5) dual booting (with XP) on this baby for almost 3 years now. Was overall pleased with the install
But last weekend i installed Linux Mint 11 on a friends old laptop (old dell with similar specs to this one) and that install has been quite impressive... ive converted at least 1 more person to Linux. It made my Mepis install feel like a slug (KDE vs Gnome i guess?)
So i pulled out an older machine (PIII 667mhz, 512 of ram) that was running Icewm on a debian base install and that was just slightly slower than Mepis
So cut the story short. I want to "upgrade" to AntiX. I havent played with AntiX since the Toussaint release. I was pretty comfortable hacking AntiX base to my liking back then, but those were on "play" machines.
A number of questions/concerns 1) Will hardware be detected? -- i assume most will work out of the box even if I go with the core install 2) Will the Mepis hacks for Aspire Ones (from the wiki) to get certain things to work also work in AntiX -- again i assume yes 3) What will happen to my dual boot? I've never actually ever dual booted from the same HD and needed to replace the Linux install -- will the installer make my life easy here? 4) Is all the AntiX goodness (ie. control centre, the awesome IceWM themes, nitrogen, those Sidux scripts) part of the core or base install or will I need to install these myself?) sorry, probably could have found all that out by reading through all the forums. but ive been away for a long time. has anyone documented a core install? i know i did one for an XFCE install a while back.
thanks in advance thanks anticapitalista for keeping up the work on this project!

For starters read the Distrowatch review posted by Silverbear in this AntiX section. You can find it here>http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20111205 several questions are answered there and the rest will get replies soon. Jerry

 Re: goodbye Mepis hello AntiX???
found some answers here viewtopic.php?f=40&t=29486and it is looking like ill be wanting to go with the base install (i am assuming all the menus, themes, scripts, etc that make up antix are here... as in iam just looking to install packages i want) so... how will installing over my current Mepis install work out? from what i recall the mepis8 install was easy.... i am assuming the AntiX will be the same and leave my winxp partitions alone and automatically update grub and give me that dual boot option. looks like i got a small project during the hols.

 Re: goodbye Mepis hello AntiX???
If familiar using the Mepis installer installing Mepis. AntiX won't give you no trouble. AntiX uses the Mepis Installer.

 Re: goodbye Mepis hello AntiX???
Just be sure to select the "right" partition for installation. For example:
sda1 = XP sda2 = Mepis
Select sda2 to install antiX. The installer will take care of the rest...

 Re: goodbye Mepis hello AntiX???
finally got a chance to play with both antix and mepis live cds
ive been running mepis 8 on my acer aspire one zg5 for the last 3 years
and im starting to feel that it is time to move on
however, ive gotten used to some of the kde apps like amarok, digikam, ktorrent
so i am thinking antix base + kde lite
so the question i have is
will antix base with kde lite (4.4???- 4.7????) be faster than mepis8 with kde 3.5
id like to change but would like to see an improvement in performance or at the very least the same. no way i can take a drop :)

 Re: goodbye Mepis hello AntiX???
The Intel video drivers, at least in M11, are much better on my original Acer Aspire One with the 945/950 graphics. It's acceptably fast, and I can play 720p h.264 movies using umplayer with the mplayer2 engine.
A desktop that boots very fast is the razor-qt desktop Tim and I both independently built for the CR, but the widgets don't work. However, you can use kwin as the window manager in it, so desktop effects and KDE service menus still work. It's useful, even in an incomplete form.

 Re: goodbye Mepis hello AntiX???
I've noticed no slowdown after adding some KDE programs. I did not install KDE per se, I simply added the programs that I wanted (they will get the dependencies needed for them to run).

 Re: goodbye Mepis hello AntiX???
One of my laptops has antiX M11 running the IceWM desktop and all the kde apps you mentioned running. (Digikam has no equal IMO) The best part is my system uses less than 65MB running at idle and all the kde stuff runs great.
