Post Without mxconfig: 1 of 2
I have been going through the Manual trying to figure out what the removal of mxconfig does to what we say, and need some help on a couple of passages. Here is the first (sorry about the formatting):
Quote:
Changing monitors
Shutdown the entire system and disconnect the power.
Unplug the monitor.
Plug in new monitor and reconnect the power to the computer.
Reboot to the LiveDVD. Be sure to press F3 to check your resolution options.
Open the MEPIS X-Windows Assistant.
On the Repair tab:
In the first field, select the hard drive where MEPIS is installed.
In the second field, select the partition where the root filesystem “/” is mounted.
Click OK or Apply. X-Windows Assistant will copy the X configuration from the LiveDVD to the /etc/X11/ folder on the partition you have specified.
Reboot without the DVD.
In my experience, the second part has not been necessary at all, so I am wondering whether it will be sufficient to change this to:
Quote:
Changing monitors
Shutdown the entire system and disconnect the power.
Unplug the monitor.
Plug in new monitor and reconnect the power to the computer.
Reboot, and the system will automatically recognize and correctly configure the new monitor.
We probably need to add a procedure for correcting the resolution if necessary, huh? Thoughts?

How about the "Display and Monitor" section in System Settings? It seems to do a fair job of setting resolutions if the driver is correct.

It does but there's that v. minor issue with the refresh rate not being correctly shown with the nVidia driver and certain xorg entries. Might be worth mentioning?

What about including this CLI method:
Code:
Xorg -configure

That can help at the moment e.g. M11, it's worth considering here that X is moving/has moved on some dists. to a setup that requires no user input at all, i.e. no xorg.conf file. There are configuration files but not intended or useful to a user.

It looks 'kinda neat' on the surface and I guess it is, just how much brain power was needed to deal with the 'rogue' graphics cards I know not but I'd put money on the fact that it isn't going to work for everyone. Though it probably won't affect me I'd like to see some measure of control or override maintained for where it is required. Many cases!
