OK, I see what happened! Jerry just skipped a line (skipped a step) see the bolded line added and minor change to the last line:
<li>You can sync your Gmail contacts with your desktop so that they will be available in any application:</li>
<ul><li>Install <strong>akonadi-kde-resource-google</strong> from the repos</li>
<li>Log out and back in to restart KDE</li>
<li>Click <strong>Start Menu > System > System Settings > Personal Information</strong> to get to the Configure KDE Resources page</li>
<li>Use the pull-down menu to select Contacts, then click Add...</li>
<li>Select Akonadi Address Books (Provides access to contact stored in Akonadi address book folders)</li>
<li>Highlight Personal Contacts > Manage Address Book Sources > Add...</li>
<li>HighlightAkonadi Google Contacts Resource > OK</li>
<li>Provide account info > OK</li>
<li>Click out to return to the Configure KDE Resources page</li>
<li>Highlight
the akonadi entry and then click the Use as Standard button if that is what you want
