Starting M11 Manual revision

#1 Postby Jerry3904 » Tue Aug 09, 2011 8:21 am

Here is the list I have been accumulating:
-need to change the package description to MEPIS 11
-alsaconf to alsa-utils
-how to add app to panel
-link to Wiki 3G, not Debian Wiki
-delete 5.3.4 Welcome Center
-localization in Writer: Both OO & LO default language is US. For those outside the US we need to make changes to get the functions working to our liking. If you follow the link I posted earlier there are several English dictionaries to choose from. Download & save the one of your choice, open LO, open writer or other app >> tools >> extension manager then add the file you just downloaded. Shut down LO then reboot. Go to tools >> language settings & make changes. These changes are global.
-add gtasks widget to Google section
-add virtual desktops
-add on how to change theme, combo of System Settings and Plymouth
-add BT file transfer:
1) right-click the BT icon in the System Tray > Manage devices. Add your device (make sure it is discoverable) if it is not already there, and click the Trust button below
2) right-click the BT icon again > Receive files configuration. Make sure the Enable box is checked, and decide where you want the files to go (I use ~/Download/BT)
3) on the device, check that the desktop is found and paired
4) then I either navigate to the file and use a long press to get a context menu, or use a free app called Bluetooth File Transfer to send
5) when the notification pops up on your desktop (see attached), click Accept
-Debian card installer (Danum)
-diff wallpapers for activities
-add link or content for mnetwork--diagnosis interpretation (http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php? ... gnosis_tab)
-5.5, change instruction about xorg.conf
-5.5 add: System Settings > Application Appearance > Fonts.
-Section 5.5 - Display - Adding Fonts, Item 4 - Microsoft Core Fonts The package is now ttf-mscorefonts-installer and is in the Debian stable repository.
-add DOSEMU to Emulation section
-add libdvdcss2 to Section 8.2 on multimedia .. Libdvdcss2 is mentioned in the "ripping video" section of multimedia, but perhaps should be further explained as "ripping encrypted DVDs", and perhaps the legal issues could get a mention, also.
Any comments, changes or additions?

One thing that could be in the manual, is a small guide on how to think when troubleshooting. Just some simple strategies, a starting point and what to do.
Writing it on a very basic theoretic level can take some time as it's differs from the usual manual stuff.
It's not written yet, maybe for the M12? Probably beyond what you asked for.

That's a good idea, but I won't try to include it this time.

We could put up a Wiki page to all draft it out for the next version, though. Would that work?

There exists a few things written about this topic, but they must be adapted for our use. And I'm sure asking some of the better problem solvers on this forum will give greater insights in the thought processes involved. If you wait a little with the wiki page until we have more than just the idea? Or be prepared it's going to take some time until we figure out which of the different methods are universal to the human brains.

In my experience none of the different methods are universal. When teaching any subject that requires the learner to figure out where to start (algebra, lawnmower repair, program debugging, you name it) you'll find a need for three or four different ways to explain things because many people just won't get the concepts if presented in a way that doesn't fit the way they think. I've known some very bright people who repeatedly failed to grasp algebra or geometry until they encountered a teacher who could explain things differently. Once it clicked, they could master the subject. There was nothing wrong with the prior teachers. It was a mismatch of teaching style & learning style.

That doesn't mean the project can't be useful. But no matter how it's written a number of folks won't catch on.

That's expected, but some can get an impulse to go on investigating. My idea was to keep it more basic than this kind of advice usually is.
How to start looking into the problem, even if you know you're completely wrong about what's causing it and be prepared to immediately scrap the original theory when anything that seems more likely turns up. Defining what you're looking for in correct technical terms. What resources exists. Which log files to read (and how they are read) for different kind of problems, etc.
I think a useful guide can be put together.

Almost any guide will be a help if it's general enough. It doesn't have to be long if it's basic enough.

Would you want to volunteer to create a first draft sometime?

I will. At least I'll look at the problem and get back shortly.

Great, thanks. You can start a new thread when you are ready, and I would suggest beginning with just some rough ideas and maybe a tentative outline?
