I have two, no three in fact.
One at the bottom with a few things in there, one small one at the top with my most used applications and a news ticker, and then hidden on the top with all sorts of special characters. I can touch the top of the screen, click on one, and then simply middle click it into the writing area of choice.

I prefer two, Standard 100% at bottom and top one sized to small setting. Same setup on KDE4. I do have one wide screen so keep bottom and add one to side.[ATTACH]2172[/ATTACH]
