Post MEPIS 8.0 Community Repo: The Pidgin Thread
Update 13 Dec. 2011: Pidgin 2.6.10.1 is now available for use form the main test repo.

Changes in the new release are documented here: http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ChangeLog

Please let us know how it's working. Thanks!

Update 26 June 2011: Pidgin 2.9.0 is now in the main community repository, due to a DOS attack that was fixed in it. However, due to an added epoch in the getdeb version that slipped by me, the 1:2.8.0 in the testing repo is still seen as the most recent version.

A simple fix is to disable the testing repo, reload Synaptic, uninstall all the parts of pidgin 2.8.0 (pidgin, pidgin-data, finch, libpurple0, libpurple-bin) and install pidgin 2.9.0. We'll have to purge 2.8.0 from testing.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had sworn we already had a 8.0 thread, but can't find it...

Anyway, we now have Pidgin 2.8.0 in the main test repository. The audio and video features had to be disabled due to the gstreamer libraries in Lenny being a bit too old. Please let us know how this is working if you give it a spin--Thanks!

Bump: security fix 2.9.0 now in main 8.0 CR, but must be manually upgraded from 2.8.0. See first post for info.

Post Re: MEPIS 8.0 Community Repo: The Pidgin Thread
Hello,
I'm a Mepis noob (heh, not again ;) ) and have a problem running Pidgin so I'd like to ask you how do I work around this error and make Pidgin run?
Code:
$ pidgin

ERROR: Caught a segmentation fault while loading plugin file:
/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstlv2.so

Please either:
- remove it and restart.
- run with --gst-disable-segtrap and debug.
Segmentation fault
sasa@mepis1:~$ apt-cache policy pidgin
pidgin:
  Installed: 2.9.0-1mcr110+1
  Candidate: 2.9.0-1mcr110+1
  Version table:
 *** 2.9.0-1mcr110+1 0
        901 http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/repo/ mepis11cr/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2.7.3-1+squeeze1 0
        801 ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main i386 Packages

If this isn't the proper place to ask this question please, forgive a noob and transfer it some place else. ;)
Thanks!

Install gnome-media, then run gstreamer-properties in a terminal as your normal user (once only).
This will configure gstreamer to avoid the problem.

2.6.10 is working fine here, and (unlike Kopete and KMess) gets round the SSL login errors for MSN about which hundreds of Google posts and questions are asked.
