Sources.list for CR in Mepis11

#1 Postby greywolf » Mon Feb 21, 2011 11:37 pm

I do apologise if this post should be in the 11Beta area - I thought it related more to here because I think it goes beyond Beta to Final Release?

I've finally got some time to have a good look at Beta2 on the test machine and here is my sources.list file:

[ talon@babylon: ~/download ]$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list
# See sources.list(5) for more information

# This file should be edited through synaptic

# MEPIS improvements, overrides and updates--the MEPIS magic
deb ftp://ftp.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp.mepis.org/mepis/ mepis-11.0 main
# MEPIS master pools, please use only if mirror is slow or down
# deb ftp://ftp.mepis.com/mepis/ mepis-11.0 main

# ISP Debian Mirror
deb http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
deb http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/debian-security/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/debian/ squeeze-updates main contrib non-free

# Mepis Community Main, Restricted, and Test Repos
deb http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/repo/ mepis11cr main non-free
deb http://restricted.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/repo/ mepis11cr restricted restricted-non-free
# deb http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/testrepo/ mepis11cr test
# deb http://restricted.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/testrepo/ mepis11cr test-restricted

# Some Debian Multimedia software might be illegal in some jurisdictions
# deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ squeeze main non-free
# Local Telco Mirror
deb http://mirror.optus.net/debian-multimedia/ squeeze main non-free

I have a couple of questions on this regarding the CR's.

Still getting '404' on the CR restricted entry so I will comment that out again. The question is - where should I watch for any announcement that that repo is finally open for business. I noticed the 1st package has gone to the restricted test repo (Videoporama I think)- so I presume it is not far away? Can the repo location not be opened even though not yet populated?

Under v8.5 I no longer needed the Debian Multimedia repo, it was sufficient to just have the CR stuff. Is there a point in this development cycle where that again becomes possible? Will it be announced or just 'come about'?

I am trying to test ogmrip in the Beta but cannot install it because of dependency conflicts with this sources.list.

Some gentle guidance would be appreciated; you know, the usual 'kick up the bum' in the right direction! ;)

cheers,
greywolf.

The index files for a repository are not created until there is something to index. That's why the "404".

Debian Multimedia was not compatible with MEPIS 8.5. Installation attemtps of many packages from d-m would fail or would remove half of KDE. Because of that, we populated the Restricted Community Repository with safe versions of those packages instead.
We don't need to do that for MEPIS 11 because debian-multimedia squeeze is compatible. We're not going to duplicate Christian Marillot's work unnecessarily.

it's because one of Warren's packages is going to be upgraded and he has the distribution packages pinned at 990. Install aptitude, then from a root terminal type aptitude install ogmrip
You will get a proposed solution that does not install ogmrip. Say no to that one. The next proposed solution will perform the necessary upgrades to install ogmrip. Answer Yes to that one.

Thanks for the very clear explanation timkb4cq.

I should have realized the "index" stuff. Our lives seem to be ruled by "index this and index that" nowadays?! Nepomuk, strigi, mono, xapian, search & launch and (God help us all) cloud computing. What; did someone get a database for Christmas?! :needcoffee:

I remember seeing some discussions about deb-m stuff. If that's sorted it should, hopefully, take some pressure off the packagers here from re-inventing the wheel. Good to know.

I tend to use aptitude for package management anyway and when I say no to the offered solution it does not offer a second option. That may be due to how I set my apt preferences to sort pinning issues I read about. I wanted the CR repos to show as updates to Main so I opted for that solution in the thread.

Anyway, I am just glad to have a bit more "tinkering" time - I will re-read that pinning discussion and see if I can sort it.
Thanks again for the guidance,
greywolf.
