kde destroyed desktop, icons, compiz etc
Long story, but I'll try. Mepis 11, compiz, cube etc. Long time using with no problems. I am trying to ssh local netbook to desktop. got it working and called startlxde (after installing lxde on desktop) worked great on the netbook until I tried to logout...no joy...just reverted to the orginal display (lxde). Sooo "reboot". Well that rebooted the desktop, so I thought not bad and called startkde...... Well, thats when it started getting weird...the netbook started showing a mirror image of the desktop screen and I did alt-f4, ctl-alt-backspace etc til I killed it all.
Well, again!! I rebooted desktop at the desktop and it came back with an apparently default kde screen....bubbles background and short task bar. OH YES before reboot I got a notification message "kde manager" or sumesuch has crashed and submit bug report which of course they would not take.
I tried mepis user assistant to restore kde apps settings with no change. I restarted compiz and still have the weird kde look.
Is there a file I can delete that will get rebuilt to my setup???
I haven't googled this much because I will probably drop kde like a hot poturde anyway.

Looks like it started when you used the netbook to start kde on the desktop .... not sure why you didn't start lxde??? as it sounds like the netbook tried to mirror the the kde desktop while running lxde on it. Then when you booted the desktop from the desktop the system tried to restore the previous booted session and whack things went south. Maybe try a reboot on the desktop and select kde from the login menu and see what happens. I bet you end up having to reselect your wallpaper, widgets, tray size, etc though. Also be sure to lock your widgets when finished if you have to reset everything.

Yea!!! UR right jbowman...thats why I posted....btw I recently changed the host name and see in ~.kde two files with the old host name (plus the same ones with new hostname).....how brave would it be to rename those files and lite the rocket??? filenames: cache-oldname, cache-newname, socket-oldname, socket-newname plus a pair of tmp-name files.
Don't know what these do and don't want to learn all the internal kde bells and whistles....

Sounds like a good place to start. If you rename the new ones to a backup name and the old ones to the current name you should be able to restore them back if it does not work. If for some reason it leaves you unbootable you can use the live cd to change them back. Good luck on it.

Re: kde destroyed desktop, icons, compiz etc
Update>>As usual, just plowing ahead..I have ubuntu 12.04 on the same desktop and am sshing into it from the netbook. This gives me a choice or lxde, gnome, and unity. Lxde works great, but I have to ctl-z the x server to get out of it. Just tried gnome, it gives me the same rotated 180 and mirrored screen. No impact on the desktop from the rotated, mirrored screen (its using unity). Have not tried unity yet, really don't know the command line to start it.>>>more tomorrow >>"pot luck" dinner at the clubhouse tonight.

Re: kde destroyed desktop, icons, compiz etc
Update: I renamed the files in .kde and did not get any change. If I stay with mepis I'll just have to reconfig the desktop. Minor problem but as I get older any change in what I'm used to is frustrating....
Do we have any kde experts??? I really don't want to dig into the kde boards and post there...

Re: kde destroyed desktop, icons, compiz etc
I had a similar problem with KDE after some updates or some data corruption. I used sgfxi to install the graphics driver again and that fixed me up.
