Mepis-KDE 4:4.7.2 upgrade. Edited. 11 11 2011, to use unstable repo, plus one file to download and install, to remove warnings,
There is 1 bug in this install, and it relates to KDE 4.7, after using Firefox and closing, it will remain in the panel, click on the date it will open click on it again to close, and Firefox in the panel will be removed.
Use a clean a 100% install for this upgrade, and do not use a wireless connection to try and do the upgrade, in simple terms it will fail.
Download Simple Root Actions Menu from here, ( unpack, open folder, press F4 log in as root, ./sram_install select Dolphin as file mgr. and install)

Install aptitude using synaptic

Using root menu backup etc/apt, and etc/xdg,
In Konsole as root
, NOTE if you are using LVM remove lvm2 from below,
then
Open etc/ as root (with root menu), delete apt, rename apt.bak to apt, delete xdg rename xdg.bak to xdg
Open Konsole as root
aptitude update
aptitude install pkg-kde-archive-keyring
(confirm the question about a missing key)
System Settings > Desktop Search > uncheck: Enable Srtigi Desktop File indexer, it can be re-enabled after the upgrade is complete.
Reboot at the login screen > Menu > Console Login
Login as root,
enter, telinit 3
Enter
press Enter to get root promt.
aptitude update
aptitude dist-upgrade
During the upgrade you will be asked,
Services to restart for GNU libc library upgrade: (Press Enter)
Restart services during package upgrades without asking ?, enter y press Enter
It will take quite a while to upgrade, and to save loosing the screen press Enter every few minutes or so,
When complete,
aptitude update
aptitude install kde-standard kdewallpapers gtk2-engines-oxygen kde-config-gtk-style kmenuedit
Type in reboot when the above actions have completed, and reboot into KDE 4.7.2.
Enable oxygen-style in System Settings > Application Appearance > GTK+ Appearance, Widget style, select oxygen-gtk2
Change to Colors click on Get New Schemes, search for: KDE4-Seasons-Colors and install, close dialog, select Summer Apply,
You add color to root by using Alt + F2 kdesu systemsettings > Application Appearance > Colors select Autumn Apply.
Install linux-image (for 32 bit linux-image-3.1.0-1-686-pae and the headers, use the appropriate one for 64 bit)

Install Firefox 7 from the community repo. then disable the repo.
Activities, the default KDE 4 keyboard shortcut, is Meta + Q and is now installed by default.
