 SolusOS Alpha 5 -- Impressive
Currently posting from the Live DVD of SolusOS Alpha 5. This is the Gnome/Debian spin that's being developed by Ikey, a Mint developer that has posted here a few times.
Fast, clean, neat, with nary a hiccup in this first live session. What is always a yardstick for me is setting up my dual monitors with nVidia graphics. In this case, the out-of-the-box behavior was to mirror the displays on each monitor. Opened the Conrol Center from the main menu, then Displays, unchecked the box for mirroring, set the resolutions for each monitor, and I was done. All pointy-clickity, no downloading required, boom, bang, done.
This is worth checking out.

 Re: SolusOS Alpha 5 -- Impressive
Question: Does the live DVD have an aufs mode? I'd like to test the repositories in the live mode.

Can't say. I didn't try to install anything. I did copy over my Fx profile just for grins (the default is bare) and played around, which means I did "write" to the Live session, but I dunno if that indicates aufs or not. I doubt it. Can't hurt to try. The torrent that was linked on Distrowatch was fast for me.

 Re: SolusOS Alpha 5 -- Impressive
The other thing I noticed is that the SolusOS 2 alpha download is only available in the 32-bit version at the present time. Is a pae kernel available for the 32-bit version?

I think the 32bit kernel might be pae enabled by default. Check this here: http://solusos.com/blog/2012/06/solusos ... -released/ {scroll to the bottom and click on the System Requirements tab}

@uncle mark: Thanks for testing :) Sidenote: I haven't had any involvement in the Mint project for some time, I only work on SolusOS :)
@joany we use unionfs. any particular advantage of aufs ?
And yes, PAE enabled kernel by default. (Also BFS, preempt)

 Re: SolusOS Alpha 5 -- Impressive
Is there anything special in how one uses unionfs?
For instance to get the Mepis LiveDVD to boot into a AUFS r/w session we need to add the 'aufs' cheatcode {without the quotes} to the kernel options line.

I'll be totally honest I've not looked into persistence as there's been no demand for it. If you find anything let me know :)

 Re: SolusOS Alpha 5 -- Impressive
I wasn't really asking about or interested in persistence. I was just wondering if anything special needs to be done to allow you install/remove packages while running in a LiveDVD session. {In Mepis we need to boot the LiveDVD using the 'aufs' option to be able to do that -- the changes don't survive a reboot}

 Re: SolusOS Alpha 5 -- Impressive
Aaah. No installing stuff works. They don't propagate to the install and are not persistent. The live policykit stuff asks for password though, debian live scripts are messed up. I stopped it doing it for networking stuff and you can use sudo without a password So usual apt-get interaction is fine
