This is what I get in fully-updated M11:-

I get this:

The Acer pdf file also works here in Okular.

One thing to try first is to install any extra Recommends or Suggests for Okular. Running "apt-cache depends okular" results in these Suggests:

Code: Select all

 Suggests: okular-extra-backends
  Suggests: texlive-binaries
  Suggests: unrar
  Suggests: poppler-data
  Suggests: ghostscript
  Suggests: kttsd

so that would be the first thing I'd try.

PS. I use the command line there because it's faster and gives me a nice output to cut and paste, unlike Synaptic.

Thanks for the advice, Stevo, but I am now convinced that this particular M11 installation is not worth a rescue attempt - I have obviously wrecked it somehow and the quickest cure will be to overwrite it with a fresh installation.
Another M11 on a different machine here confirms that Okular can read pdfs OK, so I hereby apologize to KDE/Okular for my unkind and and unjustified remarks.
