Hum, the file for the Aspire T120E user guide Acher, open for me also using Okular.

The Acer pdf file also works here in Okular. One thing to try first is to install any extra Recommends or Suggests for Okular. Running "apt-cache depends okular" results in these Suggests: so that would be the first thing I'd try. PS. I use the command line there because it's faster and gives me a nice output to cut and paste, unlike Synaptic.

Thanks for the advice, Stevo, but I am now convinced that this particular M11 installation is not worth a rescue attempt - I have obviously wrecked it somehow and the quickest cure will be to overwrite it with a fresh installation. Another M11 on a different machine here confirms that Okular can read pdfs OK, so I hereby apologize to KDE/Okular for my unkind and and unjustified remarks.
