[Solved] Texmaker issue: Cannot compile

Hi everyone!

I hope this is the rightr place to post this...

I'm having a very noob, very elemental issue with texmaker. I haven't used it in a while and I'm a little rusty, so perhaps there si something I'm forgetting.

The thing is I cannot compile my tex file to see it on pdf. If I click on the quick build button, it says "Could not start the command" and if I click on the View PDF (or DVI or PS) it open Okular, only with a message saying "Could not open file (path to the file)".

Am I missing something? As I understand, texmaker does not need an extra program to compile pdfs... (I think I windows you need an additional software)... And I don't think it is a problem with the code, because I'm not getting any error messages at all...

My documents so far looks like:
\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\title{Univariate and Multivariate Methods}

\begin{document}
\maketitle

"Then I have all my text"

\end{document}

Any ideas?

Re: Texmaker issue: Cannot compile

I don't use this, but I see that there are lots of tools available from Synaptic if you type "latex" in the search box. There is also a plugin (libreoffice-writer2latex) for LibreOffice (Writer or Calc) for automatic conversion.
Production: 4.2.0-0.bpo.1-amd64, MX-15 RC1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, Kingston SSD 120 GB and WesternDigital 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 3.16-0-4-686-pae. MX-15, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB

Re: Texmaker issue: Cannot compile

Thanks for the tip. I searched for latex on Synaptic and there are a lot of stuff. The thing is that most are tex-live and/or kile packages, and I'm using texmaker... so I don't think they could help me. I did find some packages I thought I could use (from the desacription):

latex-make
writer2latex
libreoffice-writter2xhtml

But I'm still getting the same message "Could not start the command".

Re: Texmaker issue: Cannot compile

If you start latex from the command line, do any error messages appear when it fails to convert?

Also, maybe installing all the Recommends would help:

Code: Select all

apt-cache depends texmaker(much omitted)  Recommends: aspell  Recommends: ghostscript  Recommends: netpbm  Recommends: psutils  Recommends: texlive-latex-extra

Ghostscript and psutils look to be related, but gs is probably already installed.

Re: Texmaker issue: Cannot compile

After installing texlive-latex-extra & asymptote, your test file compiled just fine & I could view the resulting PDF.

Re: Texmaker issue: Cannot compile

Well indeed after installing texlive-latex-extra & asymptote I was able to compile.

This is strange for me, because I thought tex-live and texmaker where different programs, and it surprises me that one needs packages from the other to function. (installing asymptote installed the tex-live packages as well).

Thanks for all the help =)
