 Thunderbird Junk Mail Controls
I probably should be posting this question on the Mozilla Forum, but I find the MEPIS people are usually more helpful so here goes:
The Thunderbird adaptive junk mail controls are pretty good at identifying junk mail; however, I have to activate the controls manually.
1. When I see that an incoming message is clearly junk, it isn't marked as junk right away. I have to click on "Tools > Run Junk Mail Controls on Folder" and then the little junk icon appears next to the message.
2. In the Junks Settings for the account, I have "Move new junk messages to:" enabled and set to "Junk folder on...". However, messages marked as "junk" remain in the Inbox. When I click "Tools > Delete Mail Marked as Junk in Folder" the messages are moved to the Trash.
I would like two things to happen:
A. Automatically tag all incoming messages that Thunderbird identifies as "junk", and B. Automatically move all messages tagged as "junk" to the trash
I have searched the Mozilla Forum and it seems I have applied all Thunderbird settings correctly, but I still have to do A. and B. manually.
Does anyone have Thunderbird set up to do A. and B. automatically? If that isn't possible, is there an add-on that will do "Tools > Run Junk Mail Controls on Folder" and "Tools > Delete Mail Marked as Junk in Folder" both in a single operation?

 Re: Thunderbird Junk Mail Controls
I have Icedove set up that way, joany, and the same profile worked on Thunderbird before I changed. I'm using Icedove 3.1.1 - later versions don't play nicely with the calendar add-on. The Junk Settings for my accounts seem to be as yours.

 Re: Thunderbird Junk Mail Controls
A and B is what happens for me with TB 8, joany, only I move them to the Trash folder so I can check that nothing important is in there by mistake.
My settings for the Junk tab under Preferences > Security is attached in case it helps.

 Re: Thunderbird Junk Mail Controls
Thank you both for sharing this information. Knowing that others can do something is often the first step in doing it yourself. I think I know what happened. I have various email accounts from different servers. I set up message filters in each of those accounts so that all incoming messages are moved to Inbox in Local Folders. I set up junk mail controls for the Local Folders Inbox (or at least I thought I did), but I neglected to set up Spam Assassin filtering for the different email accounts. When new junk email arrived, it wasn't being tagged as "junk" right away. Instead, junk mail was being sent to the Local Folders Inbox. Apparently the Spam Assassin filter doesn't work on the Local Folders Inbox, so junk mail just sat there until I ran the junk mail controls manually. I modified the message filters for each of my email accounts so that Spam Assassin runs first, followed by the message filter that redirects all incoming mail to the Local Folders Inbox. When an incoming message is flagged by Spam Assassin, it will go directly to the trash. If it isn't flagged by Spam Assassin, only then it will be sent to the Local Folders Inbox. The attached screen shot shows the new configuration for one of my email accounts. The Spam AssassinYes filter runs first, followed by the TransferJoan filter. I'm pretty sure this will fix the problem.

 Re: Thunderbird Junk Mail Controls
When TB junk mail is first set up it goes into " training mode ". You have to manually mark what is junk for TB to store the info. As the data base is built up the more junk is blocked.

 Re: Thunderbird Junk Mail Controls
Correct. I've been doing that all along and the filters did recognize junk mail. It's just that I had to manually run the filters because they don't run automatically in the Local Folders.

 Re: Thunderbird Junk Mail Controls
It's the same for icedove and TB.
In fact I recently moved to TB because my dad needed a proper mail prog and I got him to install that. Figured it was easiest if I was running the exact same software.
All I did was rename the .icedove folder to .thunderbird (after backing up of course), and voila, everything worked! There might have been a few settings different but as far as I saw the junk things were set the same.
I don't use the local folders (dad does, something to do with the import of his mail from Outlook, it didn't quite turn out the way that I have things here) so I never ran into the non-automatic thing.

 Re: Thunderbird Junk Mail Controls
BTW, the Lightning Calender addon does work with TB/Icedove 9.0, you just need to update it.
I run all my email through gmail and let their spam filters take care of the crud, then download the rest in Thunderbird via POP3. It's easy to set up in the program, just create a new mail account using your gmail email address and password, and Thunderbird will set it up automatically.

 Re: Thunderbird Junk Mail Controls
Yep, that works like a peach. Only every now and then something slips through and I go inside gmail and mark the thing there as spam.

I do the same. I use TB only as a backup.
