Any ideas for default applications for MEPIS 11.5?

#1 Postby Stevo » Sat Dec 17, 2011 2:28 am

These are just my thoughts, but we should let Warren know what the community wants:

A version of VLC backported from Wheezy can play just about everything. That should stay the default media player.

Music Manager /Player: Any votes for Clementine? I'll have the newest Amarok 2.5.0 up in the CR soon, but I still think Clementine beats it.

The latest static version of Calibre downloaded and installed in /opt, with some script GUI (kdialog) that will run the command to update it. Or maybe just a "calibre-static-installer" package that will run the script and conflict with the Squeeze and CR packages?

Any others?

I'd vote for the one window Gimp to be added as well, if possible, and the msn fix in kopete is quite important.

I'll add my support for Clementine as the default, and suggest Dropbox.

Gparted, I definitely do not like the KDE offering
winff
Thunderbird
skanlite
cheese - so we can test webcams from the live CD
include fatresize so the partitioner can work with thumb drives
l10n-engb language packs included because not everyone spells words like the US does.
ia32-libs preloaded in 64-bit
kdegames - maybe only to make Mepis appeal to a wider audience
midnight commander
gsmartcontrol - so we can properly diagnose a faulty HDD from the Live-Media.
exif so the system and apps can do more with digital images.
kde-servicemenu-kim4 - adds to the right click for images, a real winner.
Improved fonts - I don't see it, but its one of the more common issues pointed out to me
Auto-login to demo account from Live-CD

VLC, Clementine and Calibre agreed; add aufs by default and ceni, wicd-kde application on the live-CD.

I would not include Dropbox (although I use it a lot) unless they remove its rewriting of fstab. Until then, the first use of Dropbox can break the system - a bad introduction for a newcomer.

1. Please bring back mxconfig repair facility on the live-dvd.

2. Okular always crashes on PDFs for me - can we have a better default application for PDFs?

A number of other distributions include it by default, and don't seem to suffer any problems, so I think it can still be included as long as the problem can be solved.
