Black screen problem - need sgfxi help, I think

#1 Postby Topher » Mon Feb 13, 2012 3:42 pm

I am running M11, not using the testing or restricted repositories, and have done all the past updates. I just rebooted today for the first time since about Christmas and got a black screen. I believe it is when it tries to start kdm. I have an ATI RS880 Radeon HD 4250 on-board graphics. I ran sgfxi -L n and got:: Xorg Version 1.7 :: Kernel 2.6.36-1-mepis-pae. Then at the end it said to try to use the nouveau driver to see if that would work. So I ran sgfxi -N nouveau. It appeared to work OK but a reboot still ends up with a black screen. I have read that sgfxi should run again. But what command do I run? Do I run the same "sgfxi -N nouveau" command or some other sgfxi command? TIA

The nouveau driver is for nvidia video hardware so you definitely don't want to use it with your Radeon HD 4250 on-board graphics.

A couple sgfxi options you might try:

Code: Select all

sgfxi
with no options, sgfxi should install the fglrx proprietary driver if one's available for the HD 4250

Code: Select all

sgfxi -n
with the -n option, sgfxi should autodetect that you are using the HD 4250 and it will install the opensource radeon xorg driver

Code: Select all

sgfxi -N radeon
with the -N radeon option, it bypasses sgfxi's autodetection and forces sgfxi to install the opensource radeon xorg driver

Using sgfxi -n did the trick. Thanks!
I don't know why it said to install nouveau since it recognized I had the Radeon HD 4250.
But it is working now.
