Shortcut key to reboot Mepis 11

Post Shortcut key to reboot Mepis 11
Hello Mepis11 world,

As my computer stand still each time I run videos with vlc I have to shut it down quite brutaly using the turn off button and holding it for a few seconds.

So if someone could give me the shortcut key combination to properly reboot Mepis11 when it is not answering anymore I would really appreciate.

CTRL-ALT-SYSYREQ REISUB will reboot the system when locked. I remember it as BUSIER backwards.

If the application is stuck , you can try restarting X and re-logging in.

Try

control -Alt-backspace

This will kill X, the GUI, and any programs running.
Log bak in, and you are good to go without restarting the kernel. Certianly more gentle than the power button.

If that does not work, the control alt sys-req with REISUB ( as mentioned above) type those a bit slowly, as it may take a second or two to write out all the caches.

Here's my list...

alt-f4
alt-esc
ctrl-esc
ctrl-alt-esc (point at app to kill it)
ctrl-alt-backspace
pkill (name of app)
ctrl-alt-sysreq

I think they are in order of effectiveness???? but you may want to do a wiki or google on each one.

Sometimes an app will cause the system to become unstable and it is best to reboot. So I usually use the brute force method I suggested to avoid that possibility.

After you press the Ctrl-Alt-Esc keys the mouse pointer temporarily changes to a skull and crossbones pointer. {you can cancel the skull and crossbones pointer by pressing the Esc key}

Move the skull and crossbones pointer to whatever window/app you want to kill and click the mouse button.

The window/app you clicked on will be killed and the skull and crossbones pointer reverts back to a normal mouse pointer.

And be very careful what you click on. For instance, if you click the Desktop, you won't like what happens. :smile:
