They are sections of releases on APOD, that are explicitly released to the public domain but permission must be requested:
All the images on the APOD page are credited to the owner or institution where they originated. Some of the images are copyrighted and to use these pictures publicly or commercially one must write to the owners for permission.
I thought I would wait until one of these ended up a finalist before asking permission.

Starbirth5 and 6 come from an image that has been released under CC AT license on a Wikipedia site.
Production: 4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64, MX-15 RC1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, Kingston SSD 120 GB and WesternDigital 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 3.16-0-4-686-pae. MX-15, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB

Gotchya. I think there was a time 2-3 releases ago when I found something on APOD that I thought would be a cool MEPIS default wallpaper and was going to do the same thing. Didn't have to 'cause nobody else thought it was that cool.

You have to paste the photographers name across it, as it's released under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license. I prefer to see Mepis Linux instead of the name of some NASA guy.
Those Creative Commons things are just as locked up as any Microsoft or Apple products. A patent is a patent even if it's in gift wrapper.

We'll see...I will write them now to see if it's even possible.

If the work that was put into tracing the author of the Blue Valleys wallpaper last year had been spent with Gimp, you could at least have made eight nice wallpapers.

If that were true I wouldn't have used Creative Commons for my book. And copyright and patents are only the same for people who believe in Imaginary Property(IP).

Are you sure you have to paste the creator's name across the picture? That's not a given with CC.

The question is half the size of the universe, and the answer takes up the other half.

No, I'm not. But you have to give the photographer credit for his work. How to do that?
Was just stretching things a little to point out the need for copyright free wallpapers.

Maybe in the meta data, or the wiki . . . You're right though. Public domain or CC0 would be easier. This way you have to track the people down and get their permission.

Wrote the person cited for Starbirth2 and 4 about possible use, and got back this very nice response:
Hi Jerry

I had never heard about MEPIS I am afraid, my unix these days is Mac...

Feel free to use the images, but please give credit to Herschel and ESA.

Cheers Göran
Sounds like we could put the credit into the MEPIS version file or somewhere similar.

I personally think the motiv of "Starbirth" would be a nice one for MEPIS 12 as well...
