CMS / Hosting providers ???

#1 Postby iridesce » Sun Mar 04, 2012 9:07 pm

Greetings fellow Mepeans,

I come to you seeking knowledge and advice.

It appears that I need to move my three domains from my current hosting provider. Which is sad, as I really like giving my money to non-profits and these folks are running a small service located in Mississippi. I have been with them for 10+ years and have had a generally good experience.

However ... as one of my domains is my business one and it was recently hacked, I looked to redo the site to the latest and greatest open source cms . Which appears to me to be Drupal 7 ( though that opinion is based on limited research ). I attempted an installation and found out that fuzzymonkey cannot support PDO due to a conflict with CPanel.

So, your experience with great hosting providers and/or relatively simple open source cms would be appreciated.

wordpress is very popular with photographers, where they setup blogs with articles, images, etc.

But, it does seem to get hacked often when users don't keep up with patches.

Here's one host you may want to look at:

http://www.justhost.com

Disclaimer.. I've never used them. But, one of the members of a forum that I'm an Admin for has used them for several years without any issues for a photography site and blogs (using wordpress) until recently when his site got hacked and they temporarily suspended it (because of the hack, which was a sql injection attack taking advantage of an unpatched wordpress vulnerability). But, after it was fixed, he was back in business again, and he's had no other problems with them. So, I took a look around and it does seem like they've got pretty good pricing compared to some of the alternatives.

I use 1and1.com for my host. I have used them for about 10 years without any problems. There help system is the best, but you can get answers from them if you get the right person. They are located on the east coast N.J. or Penn. I think they have outsourced their help desk.

As for HTML/PHP type programs I am a "old school" programer and write my own code. I use NetBeans for my editor and then open the page in Firefox to view the results. After an edit all you have to do is refresh the open page in Firefox to see the results. Netbeans creates W3C compliant code without any "fluff". Feel free to go to my site ( http://www.our-richardson-web.com ) and "right click" on any of the pages to see the source code that is generated. I have updated all my pages to HTML5 even though M$'s IE8 and below doesn't support the new HTML5 tags. I just don't use them. Another good tool to use is "Total Validator". All these programs run on MEPIS 11 32/64 and M11 Roadblock 2b.

I hope this will help you in you search for answers.

The only stupid question is the one you already know the answer.

Thanks to all for your ideas - I will check them out and get back to the thread on what I ended up choosing and why.
