Post How to check Lenny library files?
Thinking about downloading this Debian odt2txt package to convert OpenOffice formatted files to plain text. Apt-get wouldn't work.

http://pkgs.org/debian-squeeze/debian-m ... l#download

Not sure if it will work on Lenny (MEPIS 8.0). Depends on the versions of the three library files listed. How do I check to my library files to see if they meet the versions listed on that page? Is this it?
Code:
jon@mepis1:/usr/lib$ find ./ -name "*libc6*"
./libapt-pkg-libc6.7-6.so.4.6.0
./libapt-inst-libc6.7-6.so.1.1
./libapt-inst-libc6.7-6.so.1.1.0
./libapt-pkg-libc6.7-6.so.4.6
jon@mepis1:/usr/lib$

This doesn't tell me if my libc6 libraries meet the 2.3.4 version number. How would I know?

For the time being you can still search for lenny packages at http://packages.debian.org. For instance I found:

Which shows the lenny versions are: libc6=2.7-18lenny7, libzip1=0.8-1 & zlib1g=1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12.

I imagine at some point in the near future that you will no longer be able to search for lenny packages at packages.debian.org because the lenny repos were removed from the server last month.

You may eventually be able to do package searches at http://archive.debian.net/ similar to packages.debian.org, but currently it only goes up to the 'etch' release.

The apt-cache policy command:
Code:
apt-cache policy libc6 libzip1 zlib1g
will also return the versions as long as you can still load the package lists. You also need to change your sources.list to something like what's now recommended in the wiki if you haven't already.

Thank you for taking time to explain that to me, kmathern.
Code:
root@mepis1:/etc/apt# apt-cache policy libc6 libzip1 zlib1g
libc6:
  Installed: 2.7-18lenny7
  Candidate: 2.7-18lenny7
  Version table:
 *** 2.7-18lenny7 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
zlib1g:
  Installed: 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12
  Candidate: 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12
  Version table:
 *** 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
W: Unable to locate package libzip1

^
This is what I got after upgrading sources.list to the version you recommended. I only understand that libzip1 is entirely missing and that I have versions of libc6 and zlib1g that are acceptable to odt2txt.

I am assuming this is from what is on my computer. I forgot to unplug my internet connection before running it. So I could be wrong. Please tell me if I am wrong.

Do you think I should upgrade libzip1 through #apt-get install in order to install the package odt2txt_0.4+git20100620-1_i386.deb ? Or would it wiser to install it from a tarball -- if one is available, I haven't checked yet ?

I think you should install with the deb that's available from the link Kent gave you above:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libzip1

Post Re: How to check Lenny library files?
From what I can see the libzip1 package is available in the http://archive.debian.org/ lenny repo (I just now added it to my sid install)
Code:
kent@mepis1:~$ apt-cache policy libzip1
libzip1:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 0.8-1
  Version table:
     0.8-1 0
        500 http://archive.debian.org/debian/ lenny/main i386 Packages
kent@mepis1:~$

@uncle mark, I don't think he will be able to download it from my earlier link, maybe from here: http://archive.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libz/libzip/. It should show up in the apt-cache policy command though.

@eemaestro, did you reload (apt-get update) after updating your sources.list? The reason I ask is the results of the apt-cache policy command you posted for libc6 and zlib1g just shows the locally installed version {100 /var/lib/dpkg/status} but not the packages that are in the archive.debian.org repository.

I stand corrected. Didn't actually follow the links beyond the first page.

That'll teach me.
