Post Login Problem
Hi

For some unknown reason today my computer will not accept my user login password. The KDM login manger will NOT let me login as Root..
I have tried to change my password through booting from cd/dvd but it will not accept the changes. So, what I would like to do is add to the grub boot menu an option to boot AS ROOT into the CLI. Another option id the alter the KDM manager to add a root login.

I am assuming that once I can get direct access to the partition I can change the user password. So does anyone know the exact lines of text I need to add to the grub menu file to boot in as root on the CLI?

Thanks in advance

grabro

You don't mention which MEPIS version you're using.

There's a line in the /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc file (or /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc if using Mepis 8.0) that allows or disallows root logins. It's in the [X-*-Core] section

Quote:
      .
      .
      .
RebootCmd=/sbin/reboot

[X-*-Core]
AllowNullPasswd=false
AllowRootLogin=true
AllowShutdown=Root
Authorize=false
AutoReLogin=false
ClientLogFile=.xsession-errors-%d
Reset=/etc/kde4/kdm/Xreset
Session=/etc/kde4/kdm/Xsession
Setup=/etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup
Startup=/etc/kde4/kdm/Xstartup

[X-*-Greeter]
AntiAliasing=false
      .
      .
      .

You can edit that file with something like nano (su to become root first).

Also a good idea is to use install disk & Mepis assistants to check partition.

You can also use init 3 or just 3 at the GRUB boot screen. That will give a console login which you can type root and then the root password. I'm pretty sure you can get to the GUI by entering startx after the above.

I've never heard of anyone not being able to login as root from the LiveDisk (CD or DVD). That's what makes the Mepis LiveCD/DVD such a powerful tool for recovery. If you really can't (remember the root password is root on the LiveDisk) then you have a defective .iso or burn.

Hi

Thanks for all your comment and advice. If fact the problem had nothing to do with the password, it was the login manager (KDM) that was throwing a wobbler.

I created another user but when I tried to login in as this user it then it showed that KDM was at fault. However by doing this it appeared to rectified itself and I have since been able to login as my normal user.. I don't what happened and I can't say I fixed it but it's now solved anyway.

Thanks again

Another 'solution' is to install GDM as your Manager. It will replace KDM and will work fine. If desired you can even go back to KDM because it will use the correct configuration then.
