Firefox 10, Mepis 8.0, 94 year old mother
My mother is 94 and has been using Mepis for several years. I left her on 8.0 familiarity purposes. She checks her email, does a little web surfing, and does her banking and bill paying. She got on today to pay her phone bill and got a message that her web browser, FF 3 was no longer accepted. I checked synaptic and there is no upgrade available. After a little forum searching it looks like Lenny and hence Mepis 8.0 is no longer supported. I really hate to take her into unfamiliar territory at this point. I did find a sort of related thread in which there was a comment (from Stevo??) that suggested enabling 8.5 repositories and just upgrading what was needed for Firefox. I tried that and still there is no Firefox upgrade showing.
What might be the simplest course at this point.

Thought about trying Opera? I doubt that Chrome or Chromium would work. But a different Browser would be what I'd suggest.
Also you might try the add-ons that switch agents. User Agent Switcher is one. Also Super User Agent. Just bring up the add-ons and enter system agent or user agent for a list.

In a Mepis 8.0 LiveISO session I'm able to install the Firefox 10 that Stevo built for M8.5 by adding the following repos: Also set 'mepis' as the preferred distro. Mark firefox for upgrade, also mark the libgtk2.0-common package for upgrade. Here's the Synaptic summary: Disable/delete the M8.5 repos that you added after you've upgraded to firefox 10.

There's going to be a security update to 10.0.2 for the Firefox version in 8.5 testing in a day or so. I've done the 64-bit build and hope to get the 32-bit done tonight, so be prepared for it.
