MEPIS 11 Community Repo: The Firefox Thread
Update: version 14.0.1 is now in the test repo.
Update: Lucky version 13.0 is now available in the main test repo.
Update 5 Feb 2012: Version 10.0, from the Ubuntu Precise sources (with the Ubuntu patches and other stuff disabled) is now in the main testing repo. 8.5 builds are coming up!
Update 15 Nov 2011: Firefox 8.0, rebuilt from the version in the Ubuntu Precise repo, is now available for testing in the main test CR. It does not support color profiles, or suffer the rendering slowdown.
Update 02 Oct 2011: Firefox 7.0.1, rebuilt from the PPA source with Ubuntu-specific patches disabled, is now in the main testing CR.
Firefox 6.0.2, rebuilt from the Ubuntu Mozilla Team PPA, is now available in the Community repository, along with language packs.
Firefox is the famous Mozilla web browser shipped in MEPIS as standard, and it's rebranded in Debian as "Iceweasel."
This build was modified to use the latest system libnss3 for maximum security, so please make sure that is also updated (currently 3.12.11-3) either from the CR or squeeze-backports.

Re: MEPIS 11 Community Repo: The Firefox Thread
7.01 from the cr testing repo makes firefox a contender again. Still light years behind Chrome for speed, 24 seconds to load a particular page from a clean start verses 8 seconds for Chrome, but at least it's better than 35 seconds as it was with FF 4.01

Re: MEPIS 11 Community Repo: The Firefox Thread
I edited that post within 30 minutes of posting it and you seem to have the original, not my edited version. Where did that go?
Given that it's now 7.5 hours later and after midnight, I'll try to re-state my edits.
I discovered some additional updates that appeared to be related to mozilla type packages, like xulrunner and libmozjs4d (and libqtwebkit4, though not too convinced it is related), then cleared all my caches as I did at the first, then re-tested and the same page that took 24 seconds to load was fully loaded in 6 seconds using FF 7.01 but it took Chrome 8s for the same page, so I had to check out where the discrepancy was. FF was not displaying a flash element, so I installed Adblock for Chrome and retested, both are now 6 seconds.
From this experience, I would say there maybe should be a couple of additional deps added in, or at the very least, have them marked as suggested packages for the latest upgrade to assist those who have just decided to give the CR test repo a try.

Re: MEPIS 11 Community Repo: The Firefox Thread
I really appreciate Stevo's work on this important package!
I run FF from Mozilla in the beta channel, and just got upgraded to FF 8.0. And that seems really fast to me, though I have not run any tests.

. Oops - my bad - Apologies... Posted in wrong thread. I like new FF, but I'm still running M-8.5.

Re: MEPIS 11 Community Repo: The Firefox Thread
Even with Iceweasel 7.0.x, I am getting real bad xorg performance-cpu at 100%. But, when I run it a second time, it seems to go well-at least not eating so many cycles.

Re: MEPIS 11 Community Repo: The Firefox Thread
Great work, thanks. There is a 'but' , it's my confusion with varieties at fault, I think. I've got an almost box stock M11-64 installed with only native packages added. Stock offering seems to be Firefox 4.0.1 although that says in the "Help" - "About Iceweasel" and the title bar also reads Iceweasel. When looking in "synaptic" I can find installed "firefox 4.0.1" and under Maintainer: it says; Maintainers of Mozilla-related packages <pkg-mozilla-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org> I'd like to update for the security patches etc. but which way to go on this? Under "Versions" tab there's a choice of firefoxii, inc 7. OK to go ahead with that or will there be sparks and then a flash? I'm sure that I've done this before but for some reason feel uneasy about it this time around.
