Post download disconect?
there seems to be a disconect between where firefox downloads files and the actual file itself.
in firefox downloads are directed to home/username/desktop/downloads.
if i go to firefox tools, downloads all files are there
if i go to the desktop downloads file ( which has the same above address- home/username/desktop/downloads)
only a few of the same files are there. what gives?

There is some useful advice on problems with FF downloads in the first couple of entries on MozillaZine:

Post Re: download disconect?
I've tried downloading direct to the desktop with FF, Iceweasel and Sea Monkey. They never appear on the desktop, despite setting that location in Preferences.

So now I always default to the designated Download folder under /home/username/Downloads. What the problem is (browser, SM or KDE) I don't know.

Reflecting back, it's not ideal downloading to the desktop as it massively increases the size of the user profile and can stall it (although that may be just a Win NT thing.)

Cheers

I do not know why one would want to download to the desktop, but I have experimented with it, and, in my case, downloaded files do show up in the desktop folder.

If, for example, you open/view a PDF file online in your browser, it will show as being downloaded in the Fx Download Manager, but won't show up in your Downloads directory unless you actually do a Save Link As or similar.

Just one explanation.

Downloading directly to the desktop is working perfectly with Firefox 4.0.1
It's convenient when you download hundreds of small files that must be sorted in different folders. Seeing them and moving them manually makes it easier to remember where you put them.

I thought that KDE made it much more difficult to download to the Desktop. Perhaps this is tied to which view you are using?

I have always downloaded to the Desktop, even back in my Windows days.

I'm using Workspace type "Desktop" in System Settings and "download to Desktop" in the Firefox preferences. Didn't know there was any changes.

I used to, in my Windows Days, but haven't since I ran into Linux.

Since memory can play tricks nowadays, I'll just say that I am under the impression that someone (perhaps me) had had a problem downloading to the KDE Desktop. I certainly can't say as to the version with any clarity. Except it probably isn't Mepis 11. My impression is that it was a KDE 4-based distribution. But I can't say for sure. Pretty sure it was me. Pretty sure I wasn't alone.

Makes me feel ready for the 'Home'. :shh:
