 Re: Really slow boot up
. You might install KSystemLog and then use it to examine the logs. It might show you what's taking so long during boot.

 Re: Really slow boot up
Nothing shows up as failed. I can boot faster using the DVD than the hard drive. Does Mepis save a log as it's booting up and if so where is it Saved?? I repartition the drive and installed XP PRO , 4 gig at the start of the drive. The boot is normal up to the menu selection screen. It boots fast into XP, but when I pick Mepis it is still the same, Slow.

 Re: Really slow boot up
I do not see why the boot is slow, which log file would be the best to attach: kernellog or systemlog??
How do you attach a file??

 Re: Really slow boot up
Okay, now I'm confused. How would the rootdelay cheatcode address a slow boot time on an installed system?

 Re: Really slow boot up
UM, it shouldn't. i'm assuming the OP is timing things one the process begins, not from the initial boot menu.
typically, the major cause of delays like this are either a HDD issue OR problems in obtaining an IP from your DHCP server.
BUT, it boots fast into XP so the HDD isn't likely an issue, and you said you set the network to manual.
the only other thing i can think of is that you're out of HD space. when you boot into mepis run df and post what it reports. if you have little or no space left then your system will have an ungodly time trying to do anything.

df reports old_fool@mepis2:~$ df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda4 10673476 3634456 6496828 36% / tmpfs 516268 0 516268 0% /lib/init/rw udev 508268 288 507980 1% /dev tmpfs 516268 4 516264 1% /dev/shm /dev/sda2 59574752 15903016 40645492 29% /home old_fool@mepis2:~$ If you check the 1st post, you can see how the drive was partition. The root was resized to make room for 4.4 GiB partition to install XP. I have spent today running hardware test, and can find nothing wrong with the hardware. To me it seems like the computer freezes and if you wait a minute or so then it starts working. Looks like I may have to live with the slow boot or try another version of linux. I have a kernel log from one of the boots, it is 74.2 KiB, how di I attach it.

 Re: Really slow boot up
KDiskFree shows /dev/sda1 vfat 4.4 GiB 2.5GiB free - XP /dev/sda2 ext3 56.8 GiB 38.8 free - home /dev/sda4 ext3 10.2 GiB 6.2 free - root not shown is 2.07 GiB swap Here is the start partition sda1 14.4 for root sda2 57.72 for home sda3 2.07 for swap When I resized root to install XP, XP said I had too many partitions and would not install. So I delete the root and used XP to make it's own partition. After XP was working, put Mepis dvd in and recreated root and install saving my home. KPart shows the correct positions on the disk but they are renamed like above. I just install xp for testing, my plan was Mepis only laptop.
