I have installed Mepis 11 today, but I cannot access the internet with my Huawei E156G Mobile Broadband dongle. This works well with my other Debian OS (6.04).

On Mepis 11, the Dongle is recognised (using lsusb) and is listed as at tty/usb1 (using dmesg).

The Network Manager Mobile Broadband tab is "greyed out". Using kpp, I can get as far as "Modem Ready" and "Connecting to Internet"; but the next message is "No Carrier".

I am using my other OS, Debian 6 to send this message.

Can anyone help? I am an everlasting newbie!

Thanks Jerry. I looked at the Mepis Manual and followed the link to the Debian Wiki. My Huawei dongle (E156G) isn't listed, although the E220 is. The latter is "detected" by Mepis on my computer, so perhaps they are the same or similar?

I tried the scripts recommended, but no luck. Trying KPPP again, I get no further than "pppd daemon died unexpectedly". It looks ominously like my modem is not supported, although, as I said, it works automatically in network-manager when I use most LInux systems up to the very latest kernels, which don't seem to recognise my 3G modem!

If there is a script I could use, could anyone link me to it?

First: try installing the module modemmanager from the repos using Synaptic or apt-get and reboot. If all is well, you should be able to use network manager in the System Tray to manage the connection.

Thanks again Jerry. I will try to download modemmanager and transfer the file to the Mepis OS. I guess this is possible? I can't do it from within Mepis of course (no internet connection!).

Download either the 32bit or 64bit version from ...

Install with either gdebi-kde (just click on the .deb) or dpkg. It's dependencies should already be installed.

When I started using a 3G modem I had to find a path that would work. The wiki page gives really good instructions but even then I had to try several names to get my modem to work. I ended up with something that was a little different than the address/path (for the modem) given to me by the command that I used from the wiki. To do this I setup KPPP in every other way and just went through the various names (paths) that were available. (I tried the first listing for each 'section' of choices) Once you find the correct address KPPP will connect. I don't need to guess anymore. That address is the same for all the distributions I use. As is KPPP.
